Tag 9 / Day 9
Nach dem ich ja gestern bereits kurzfristig die Planung geändert habe, habe ich das heute noch einmal gemacht. Auf Grund des guten Wetters, habe ich mich heute Lower Manhattan gewidmet. Sprich, One World Trade Center Observatory inkl. Gedenkstätte, Staten Island Ferry und Battery Park. Die beiden Museen schiebe ich erst einmal so lange nach hinten wie es geht. Die kann ich nämlich besuchen, auch wenn schlechtes Wetter sein sollte. Aber bisher hatte ich damit viel Glück.
Also gings ab in die Metro Richtung Downtown. Ausgestiegen bin ich direkt im "Keller" vom Oculus. Das Oculus ist ein futuristischer Neubau, eine Art Markthalle bzw. Shopping Center. Es wurde genau wie die meisten Gebäude auf dem Platz nach den Anschlägen von 9/11 errichtet.
Von dort kam ich gleich ins One World Trade Center Observatory. Hierfür konnte ich durch den Sightseeing Pass mir wieder ein kostenloses Ticket holen. Das Ticket hatte ich recht schnell. Durfte dafür auch an den anderen Wartenden vorbei. Also Fast Lane. 😁 Danach hatte ich aber keinen Vorrang mehr und musste wie alle anderen Schlange stehen, um durch den Sicherheitscheck zu gehen. Wie am Flughafen alles aus den Taschen raus, Gürtel ab und Rucksack bzw. Tasche in eine Box legen. Komischerweise musste ich meine Uhr nicht abnehmen. Die Dame am Check hat mir erklärt, dass der Körperscanner die elektronischen Bauteile in der Uhr erkennen kann. Aber anscheinend keinen Plastikgürtel. 😑 Naja, wie dem auch sei, ich war schnell durch und dann ging es mit einem Fahrstuhl hoch in die 102. Etage. Auf dem Weg nach oben wird in den Fahrstuhlwänden die Entwicklung Manhattans gezeigt. Man kann somit toll erkennen, wie sich die Stadt im Laufe der letzten 200 Jahre verändert hat. Inkl. Bau und Zerstörung des World Trade Centers.
Oben angekommen werden auf einer langen Wand typische New Yorker Szenen abgespielt, bis dann auf einmal die Wand hochfährt und den Blick Richtung Brooklyn Bridge freigibt. Toller emotionaler Moment. Super Inszenierung. Gänsehaut pur.
Nachdem die Wand wieder runtergefahren ist, konnten wir uns auf dieser Etage und eine Etage höher frei bewegen. Wer wollte konnte für $15 ein IPad mieten und damit Infos von Sehenswürdigkeiten o.ä. aufrufen.
Einiges weiß ich und das was ich nicht weiß erfahre ich im Internet und das kostet mich keine $15. Aber wer mag, kann das gerne machen.
Die Aussicht ist super. Gerade bei klarem Wetter. Man kann wieder sehr weit sehen. Richtung Norden (Uptown oder auch Upper Manhattan) aber auch rüber nach New Jersey, Brooklyn inkl. der Brooklyn Bridge und zur Freiheitstatue.
Leider ist man nach kurzer Zeit schon komplett rum. Man kann hier aber auch in einem Restaurant etwas essen und sich überteuerte Souvenirs kaufen. Ich habe mich dann wieder auf den Weg runter gemacht und mir den Platz angeschaut.
Auf dem Platz gibt es u.a. zwei sog. "Pools". Diese zeigen, wo die beiden Zwillingstürme vor dem Anschlag standen. Es fließt ständig Wasser. Auf den Rändern sind die Namen aller an diesem Tag bzw. an den Tagen danach durch die Nachwirkungen, verstorbenen Menschen. Bei einigen war eine weiße Rose oder eine Fahne oder anderes symbolträchtiges in den Namen gesteckt. Das bedeutet, dass diese Person an dem Tag Geburtstag hätte.
Der Platz und das One World Trade Center sind toll geworden. An einigen Stellen wird zur Zeit noch gebaut. Auch wird im Moment am Liberty Park gebaut. Zusätzlich gibt es noch ein Museum. Leider mit sehr viel Wartezeit. Darauf hatte ich dann keine Lust und bin weiter zum Battery Park.
An dem ganzen 9/11 Memorial sieht man sehr schön die Mentalität der Amerikaner. Sie stecken nach verheerenden Katastrophen, wie dieser Anschlag einer war, nicht den Kopf in den Sand, sondern sie halten zusammen und bauen wieder auf. Und ja, sie machen auch Geld damit. Was ich aber auch legitim finde. Schließlich hat die Zerstörung und der Aufbau Milliarden gekostet. Und so lassen sie den Menschen die Möglichkeit Anteil an dem Allen zu nehmen. Hau einen Amerikaner um, er steht stärker wieder auf. Einfach toll!
Der Battery Park ist ein kleines Fleckchen Grün an der südlichen Spitze von Manhattan. Auf dem Weg dorthin bin ich an einem Gebäude vorbeigekommen, dass mir irgendwie bekannt vorkam: Das Gebäude oberhalb des Brooklyn Battery Tunnel bzw. das Gebäude der Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority (Foto 4. Reihe ganz rechts). Vielleicht erkennt es der ein oder andere..... Falls nicht, Stichwort: Men in Black! Dieses Gebäude hat in den Filmen und der Comicserie als Hauptzentrale der Men In Black gedient.
Vom Battery Park aus kann man die Fähre nach Liberty Island (zur Freiheitsstatue) und zu Ellis Island nehmen. Nach Ticketkauf natürlich. Weiter findet man hier eine kleine Area mit Wasserspielen für Kinder.
Nach einem kleinen Stopp bin ich aber weiter zur Whitehall Station oder besser bekannt als Staten Island Ferry Station. Von hier fährt alle 30 Minuten eine KOSTENLOSE Fähre nach Staten Island. Und von da natürlich auch kostenlos wieder zurück. Näher kommt man der Freiheitsstatue kostenlos nicht. Auf dem Weg nach Staten Island habe ich die Falsche Seite der Fähre gewählt, da ich dachte, dass sie nach dem Ablegen noch drehen würde.
In Staten Island habe ich nichts weiter gemacht. Hier gibt es aber u.a. ein Kindermuseum. Mit der nächsten Fähre gings dann also wieder zurück. Dieses Mal auf der richtigen Seite stehend. Und nach kurzer Zeit kam sie: die Freiheitsstatue.
Eine Fahrt dauert gute 10 Minuten. Wer also kein teures Ticket für die Freiheitsstatue kaufen möchte, sie aber trotzdem sehen möchte, dem sei diese Fähre ans Herz gelegt. Damit endet dann auch schon der heutige Tag für mich. Nach vielem Laufen war ich dann doch recht froh wieder zurück im Hotel zu sein.
After I changed yesterday the planning, I did it today, too. Because of the great weather I wanted to see Lower Manhattan: One World Trade Center Observatory incl. the Memorial, Staten Island Ferry and Battery Park. The both museums I'll putting on later days. I can visit them if on one day the weather should be bad. But till today I got lucky.
So I took the Metro Downtown. I got out at the bottom of the Oculus. Oculus is a futuristic new building as a kind of a Mall. It was built like the other buildings on the ground of the destroyed WTC after 9/11.
From there I immediately got into the One World Trade Center Observatory. I also could use my Sightseeing Pass for a free ticket. I got the ticket very fast because I could use the Fast Track and could pass the other people. 😁 But after that I also had to wait in line to get through the safety check. Like at the airport, empty your pockets, put your belt off and put everything and the bag in a box. But I didn't have to put my smartwatch in the box. I could leave it at my wrist. I wondered why. And the woman at the check told me that the scanner 'sees" every electronic part of the watch. But not my plastic belt. 😑 How ever I passed the check very quick and we could take the elevator up to the 102nd floor. On the way up we saw around the cabin a video which shows the changing of the city over the past 200 years. So you can see how Manhattan changed over the years and how the buildings were built incl. building and destroying of the WTC.
After we arrived on the top we saw another video on a big wall which shows the typical life in NYC. After a few minutes the wall got up and opened up to the beautiful view of the Brooklyn Bridge. An awesome emotional moment. Great staging. Only goosebumps.
After the wall came down we could walk around this floor and one floor up. Everyone who wants could rent an IPad for $15 and see some informations of NYC and the landmarks and so on.
I do know some and everything I don't know I can search on Google and that will not cost me $15. But who like to, should do it.
The view was amazing. Especially at good weather like today. You can see miles over miles again. In north direction (Uptown or also called Upper Manhattan) but also to New Jersey, Brooklyn incl. Brooklyn Bridge and to Lady Liberty. Unfortunately you're done after a short time. But you also can eat here in a restaurant and buy very expensive souvenirs. I got back down and saw the Memorial.
On the Memorial ground you can find two pools. These two are showing where the two towers stood before 9/11. Into the pools water is running. On the edges there are the names of everyone who died on and in cause of 9/11. At some names you can see a rose, flag or something similar. This means that this person has his birthday on this day.
The Memorial ground and the One World Trade Center are amazing. At some parts they are still building. Also at the Liberty Park. You also can find a museum but with a lot of waiting time. Too much for me so I walked down to the Battery Park. At the whole Memorial you can see the mindset of the americans. They don't bury their heads in the sand after such a fatal disaster like 9/11. They hang together and build up everything. And yes, they are also earning money with this. But in my eyes it is ok. Because the destruction and the rebuilt cost billions of dollar. They give everyone the possibility to feel sympathy for this. Kick down an american and he will rise up stronger than ever. Great!!
The Battery Park is a small part of green at the south side of Manhattan. On the way I passed a building I guess I know: The building over the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel resp. the building of the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority (picture in row 4 on the right). Maybe someone will also know this building and for the other who don't know it: I just say 'Men in Black'. This building is the HQ in the movies and the comic series.
From the Battery Park you can take the ferry to Liberty Island (Lady Liberty) and to Ellis Island. After you bought a ticket. You also can find a small area with some water for kids.
After a short stop I got on to the Whitehall Station or better known as the Staten Island Ferry Station. From here you can take every 30 minutes a FREE ferry to Staten Island. And also from there back to Manhattan. You can't get as near as with this ferry for free close to Lady Liberty. On the way to Staten Island I choosed the wrong side of the ferry because I thought the ferry will spin after starting.
In Staten Island I didn't do anything. You can visit among others a Kids Museum. With the next ferry I drove back to Manhattan. This time standing on the right side. After a short time we saw her: Lady Liberty.
One trip takes 10 minutes. For everyone who don't want to buy an expensive ticket for Lady Liberty but want to see her this is the best way. So this day comes to an end. After walking a lot I was happy to be back at the hotel.
