Tag 3 / Day 3
Portland, White Mountains
Der Bericht von Tag 3 kommt leider auch mit etwas Verspätung, da das Internet im Hotel eine Katastrophe war.
Heute bin ich von Boston nach Tamworth bei den White Mountains gefahren. Geplant war ein Besuch in Salem, York und Portland.
Gut gestärkt nach dem Frühstück ging es gegen 8 Uhr los Richtung Salem. Salem war nur gute 20 Minuten entfernt. Der Ort ist weltberühmt durch die Hexenverbrennungen der letzten Jahrhunderte. Es gibt ein Museum dazu aber mehr leider nicht. Da es aber um halb 9 noch zu hat, ich noch einiges vor mir hatte, bin ich weiter nach York.
In York gibt es das Cape Neddick Nubble Light. Ein alter Leuchtturm in bzw. vor einem kleinen Küstenort. Der Leuchtturm liegt auf einer kleinen Insel am äußersten Zipfel des Ortes und man kann nur mit dem Boot auf die Insel gelangen. Es werden dazu auch Fahrten angeboten. Der kleine Küstenort schaut ganz nett aus. Tolle Privathäuser. Ein guter Platz zum Leben. 😁 Natürlich aber auch voller Touristen. Wie die beliebten Ostseeorte bei uns.
Nachdem ich mich eine Weile dort aufgehalten und die Seeluft genossen habe, bin ich weiter nach Portland zum berühmten Portland Headlight, auch ein Leuchtturm. Hier ist alles etwas größer aufgebaut und man kommt auch an den Leuchtturm ran. Rauf geht es nur an bestimmten Zeiten mit Führung. Auch anders als bei dem Leuchtturm in York ist, dass hier früher mal ein Fort war. Außerdem ist er der älteste Leuchtturm in Maine.
Ich habe irgendwo mal gelesen, dass man, wenn man in Maine ist, unbedingt Lobster essen sollte. Glücklicherweise stand heute ein Foodtruck dort. War zwar mit $20 verdammt teuer aber auch sehr lecker. Ich denke in einem Restaurant hätte ich mehr bezahlt. Ich habe ihn als Lobster Roll gegessen. Eine Art Hot Dog Brötchen mit Lobster und Mayo. Bei McDonalds gibt es ihn übrigens auch, aber das wollte ich mir nicht antun. Bei dem Foodtruck ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass er fangfrisch ist um einiges höher.
Gestärkt ging es dann auf die letzte Etappe nach Tamworth. In den White Mountains gibt es u.a. den Mount Washington, den man mit einer alten Zahnradbahn erklimmen kann. Im Hotel habe ich dann aber herausgefunden, dass die nur bis 15 Uhr fährt, ich aber erst kurz vor 16 Uhr im Hotel angekommen bin. Also leider kein Trip auf einer historischen Eisenbahn.
Die Gegend um die White Mountains ist herrlich. Überall umringt von Gebirgen und die Orte haben diesen Wintersportortflair, den man aus Filmen und Serien kennt, halt im Sommer nur ohne Schnee. 😁 Aber eine wirklich tolle Gegend.
The report of day 3 is a little bit late, too, because the wifi was terrible at the hotel.
Today I drove from Boston to Tamworth at the White Mountains. I planned a visit in Salem, York and Portland.
Strenghtened by the breakfast I started at 8 am to Salem. Salem was approx. 20 minutes away. The village is famous by his burning of witches of the past centuries. There is a museum but nothing more. And the museum opened at 9 am and I had a lot to do today so I took on my way to York.
In York you can find the Cape Neddick Nubble Light. An old lighthouse in resp. in front of a small coast city. The lighthouse is on a small island and you only can reach the island with a boat. They offer some tours to the island.
The small coast city looks pretty nice. Great private houses. A place to live. 😁 But full of tourists.
After I stayed a while and enjoyed the sea air I took on the way to Portland to the famous Portland Headlight, another lighthouse. Everything is bigger there and you can go to the lighthouse. In the lighthouse you only can go at a specific time with a guided tour. Also different to the lighthouse in York, here was a Fort. And it is the oldest lighthouse in Maine.
I've read that you have to eat Lobster when you're in Maine. And hey, fortunately there was a foodtruck. It was pretty expensive with costs of $20 but pretty delicious. I guess in a restaurant it will be more expensive. I ate it as a Lobster Roll. It was a kind of a Hot Dog Bun with Lobster and mayo. You can buy it also at McDonalds but I didn't want to. I guess at the foodtruck the chance will be higher that the lobster is freshly caught.
After lunch I took the last stage for today to Tamworth.
At the White Mountains you can find the Mount Washington which you can reach with an old cog railroad. In the hotel I've read that the railroad is just driving till 3 pm and it was past 4 pm when I reached the hotel. So no trip with this historic railroad.
The area around the White Mountains is beautiful. Overall mountains around the cities and the cities got the "Wintersportcityflair" you know from movies and TV series. But in the summer without snow. 😁 But a pretty nice area.
