Da ich dieses Mal die Reise komplett in Eigenregie geplant und gebucht habe, stellten sich mir einige Fragen:
Wie lange möchte ich verreisen?
Wo starte ich und wo hört meine Tour auf?
Wo soll die Route lang gehen?
Wo bleibe ich nur eine Nacht und wo lege ich einen Extratag ein?
Finanziell habe ich mir keine Grenze gesetzt. Wusste aber vorher, dass es wieder so um die 3.000 € sein wird.
Wie lange möchte ich verreisen?
Das war so ziemlich die erste Frage, die ich mir gestellt hatte. Ich konnte sie aber erst als eine der letzten beantworten. Eine Grenze musste ich mir setzen, da ich nur maximal 3 Wochen Urlaub am Stück bekomme. Und davon wäre eine Woche ganz gut um sich vom Jetlag zu erholen. Also blieben zwei Wochen übrig. Letztendlich sind es 13 Tage geworden, wobei der erste Tag die Ankunft ist. Am letzten Tag habe ich noch genug Zeit um einiges zu sehen. Also effektiv 12 Tage!
Wo starte ich und wo hört meine Tour auf?
Diese Frage war eigentlich relativ einfach zu beantworten. Dieses Mal stand bei mir auch im Vordergrund, dass ich einen Direktflug haben möchte und er sollte günstig sein. Auch wenn ich mir finanziell keine Grenze gesetzt habe, wollte ich trotzdem so günstig und gut wie möglich verreisen. Und da kam nur New York in Frage. Hier gab es tolle Angebote direkt bei airberlin. Meine Tour wird auch wieder in New York enden. Das hat zwei einfache Gründe: Ich brauche keinen teuren Gabelflug und ich spare mir die Einwegmiete für den Mietwagen, da ich ihn dort abgebe, wo ich ihn abhole.
Wo soll die Route lang gehen?
Die wichtigsten Städte sind, wenn man die Geschichte der USA betrachtet, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore und natürlich Washington D.C. Also war hier schon eine grobe Richtung vorgeben. Aber nur diese drei Städt war mir etwas zu wenig. Also habe ich mir noch kleine Schauplätze rausgesucht wie z.B. Gettysburg und Charlottesville. Schon sah alles etwas mehr nach einer Rundtour aus. Da auf dem Weg nach Charlottesville der Shenandoah National Park liegt, habe ich diesen auch in meine Tour mit einbezogen. Auch habe ich mir eine tägliche Fahrt von nicht mehr als 3-4 Stunden vorgenommen. Es ist eine tolle Gegend und da wird man sicher oft genug anhalten um Fotos zu machen. Einzig die Strecke über den Shenandoah NP wird etwas mehr als 6 Stunden in Anspruch nehmen (reine Fahrzeit). Nach ein bisschen hin und her probieren und Infos über die Gegenden einholen, stand meine Route fest. Von der Richtung der Route habe ich mich dazu entschieden, gegen den Uhrzeigersinn zu fahren, was am Ende sich aber als die etwas teurere Variante erwiesen hat. Durch diese Richtung konnte ich NYC nur über Brücken am Ende wieder erreichen, was bedeutete, dass ich Maut zahlen musst. Wäre ich andersrum gefahren, wäre ich über Land nach NYC gekommen und hätte mir die Maut i.H.v. $15 gespart. Also Tipp: bei einer Rundreise mit Start und Stopp NYC, fahrt so, dass ihr über Land wieder in die Stadt kommt.
Wo bleibe ich nur eine Nacht und wo lege ich einen Extratag ein?
Hier war mir klar, dass ich in Washington D.C. definitiv einen Extratag einlege, auch wenn das nicht im Entferntesten ausreicht, um die ganze Stadt zu erleben. Ich habe mir aber vorher rausgesucht, was ich unbedingt anschauen möchte. Hier war mir "The Mall" am wichtigsten. An der "The Mall" sind alle wichtigen Museen, Gedenkstätten und Sehenswürdigkeiten gesammelt zu finden. Auch zum Weißen Haus ist es von hier nicht weit.
New York wollte ich in einem eigens dafür geplanten Urlaub anschauen, so dass ich hier wirklich nur lande, eine Nacht schlafe und von hier wieder nach Hause fliege.
Da Boston in Sachen Geschichte einiges zu bieten hat, habe ich auch hier einen Extratag eingeplant. Und ich habe die Reise so geplant, dass ich am Independence Day in Boston bin. An den restlichen Stationen bleibe ich nur eine Nacht.
Im Nachhinein hätte man noch einen Extratag im Shenandoah NP einplanen können. Aber hier waren alle Hotels/Motels ausgebucht.

I didn't put me a ceiling on the costs of the journey. I knew that it will be about $3,000.
How long do I want to travel?
This was the first question for me. But I could find an answer at the end of my planning. I had to put a ceiling on it because I have just 3 weeks of vacation at a time. From these 3 weeks I'll need one to recover from the jetlag. So I have two weeks for my vacation. At least there will be 13 days. But the first is just for the arrival. The last day I'll have enough time to see a lot. So actual I'll have 12 days!
Where do I want to start and where do I want to end my tour?
This was an easy answered question. This time I wanted a direct flight and it should be low in price. Even I didn't put a ceiling on the costs, nevertheless I want to travel as cheap and good as possible. So New York is qualified for the start and end. Airberlin had good offers. There are two reasons for my choice: I'll don't need an expensive open jaw flight and I can save the money of the one-way rental for the rental car.
Where should the tour go?
The important cities are Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and of course Washington D.C. in the history of the US. So I had a rough direction. But just this three cities are not enough for me. So I found some small important locations as like Gettysburg and Charlottesville. Now my tour looks more like a tour. On the way to Charlottesville there is the Shenandoah National Park. So I'll drive through it. I planned a daily trip not more than 3-4 hours. It's a great area so I guess I'm gonna stop a lot and take a lot of pictures. Just the tour through the Shenandoah NP will be approximately 6 hours long (just the time for driving). After a little bit of thinking about and searching some informations about the area, I finished my route. By the direction of this route I decided to drive it counterclockwise, what was the more expensive version. Because of this direction I just could reach NYC over the bridges so I had to pay toll. If I were driven clockwise I had reached NYC by land and I had saved the toll. Tip: At a round trip with start and stop in NYC, take the drive over land to reach NYC.
Where do I want to stay just one night and where do I want to plan an extra day?
I realized that I want to stay an extra day in Washington D.C. Even it is not enough time for this city. But I seeked out the important things for me. The Mall is the important thing I want to see. At The Mall you can find the most important museums, memorials and sights. Also the White House isn't far away.
New York I want to visit at an extra vacation. So I'm gonna just landing there, have one night and I'm gonna flight back home from New York.
Because you can find a lot of historical stuff in Boston, I planned an extra day in Boston, too. And I planned my tour so I'm in Boston at the Independence Day. At the other stages I'm gonna stay just one night.
Afterwards I had to plan an extra night at the Shenandoah NP. But every hotel/motel was fully booked.
