Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Chantilly
Heute ging es in die Hauptstadt der USA: Washington D.C. oder besser gesagt in einen Vorort. 😁 Auf dem Weg habe ich die Außenstelle des Smithsonian Air and
Space Museum in Chantilly besucht. Wie der Name es schon sagt, ist es ein Luft- und Raumfahrtmuseum. Das Smithsonian hat hier einen großen Hangar in Benutzung, da sie im Museum in
D.C. nicht alles ausstellen können. Gerade die großen Flugzeuge und das Spaceshuttle Discovery. Das Museum selber ist kostenlos, dafür kostet der Parkplatz aber
$15.
Es ist eine tolle Ausstellung. Es wird die Geschichte des Fliegens und der Raumfahrt mit originalen Exponaten erzählt. In der Ausstellung findet man die wichtigsten amerikanischen zivilen, aber
auch militärischen Flugzeuge. U.a. steht hier die „Enola Gay“, das Flugzeug, das damals die Atombombe auf Hiroshima abgeworfen hat.
Aber auch die Concorde steht hier, deutsche und japanische Flugzeuge aus dem 2. Weltkrieg und, wie bereits erwähnt, das Spaceshuttle Discovery. In diesem Bereich sind auch einige Satelliten und
Raketen ausgestellt, aber auch ein Exemplar des Mutterschiffs von Steven Spielbergs „Unheimliche Begegnung der dritten Art“. Man kann an diesem Modell sehr viel sehen, im Gegensatz zum Film. Z.B.
hat Spielberg hier verschiedene kleine Easter Eggs versteckt wie z.B. einen kleinen R2-D2 oder ein U-Boot und einen VW Bus. Ich habe leider nur den R2-D2 gefunden aber dafür auch einen TIE
Fighter. Ich hatte ja gehofft, die USS Enterprise aus Star Trek hier zu sehen, da sie restauriert wurde und eigentlich wieder in der Ausstellung stehen soll. Vielleicht steht sie ja in dem Museum
in D.C.
Nach über zwei Stunden dort und ein bisschen Souvenirshopping, bin ich dann weiter zum Hotel und habe den Tag ausklingen lassen. Morgen wird sicher etwas anstrengender.
Today I’ll reach the main city of the USA: Washington D.C. or better to say a suburban city of D.C. 😁 On the way I visited the outpost of the Smithsonian Air
and Space Museum in Chantilly. How does the name say’s it is an Air and Space Museum. The Smithsonian has a huge hangar in use because in the building in D.C. isn’t enough space to
show all of the exhibits. Like the big planes and the Spaceshuttle Discovery. The museum itself is free, but the parking costs $15.
It’s a great exhibition. They are showing the whole history of flying with original exhibits. In the exhibition you can find the important american civil but also military planes. Among others
you can find the ‚Enola Gay‘, the plane which dropped the nuclear bomb on Hiroshima.
But you also can find the Concorde, some German and Japanese planes from World War II and, as I told, the Spaceshuttle Discovery. In this area you also can find some satellites and rockets but
also an exhibit of Steven Spielbergs ‚Close Encounters of the Third Kind‘. You can see more than in the movie of the ship. For example you can find some Easter Eggs which Spielberg has hidden,
e.g. a small R2-D2, a submarine or a Volkswagen Bus. But I just found the R2-D2 and a small TIE Fighter. I hoped to see the USS Enterprise from Star Trek, because she was restored and should be
back in the exhibition. Maybe I will see her in D.C. After two hours at the museum I drove to my hotel and relaxed the rest of the day. Tomorrow will be more exhausting than today.
