Washington D.C.
Tag 2 in Washington.
Heute ging es mit Bus und der Metro, man benötigt übrigens eine SmarTrip Card um mit der Metro zu fahren, direkt nach Washington D.C. Die SmarTrip Card kann man entweder in ausgewählten
CVS/pharmacy Läden kaufen oder direkt in der Metro Station am Automaten. Ich habe die Tageskarte gewählt, da nur noch eine Wochen- und Monatskarte zur Auswahl standen. In den ausgewählten Läden
bekommt man aber eine Version, auf die man Geld laden kann, wie eine Prepaid-Karte.
Startpunkt in D.C. war das Smithsonian Castle, das Visitor Center direkt an der Mall. Die Mall ist hier kein Einkaufscenter sondern so wird die Meile, an der alle
Smithsonian Museen gelegen sind, genannt. Die Meile verbindet aber auch das Washington Monument und das Kapitol.
Im Smithsonian Castle habe ich mir einen Plan geholt und wollte ursprünglich mit dem Air and Space Museum anfangen. Die machen aber erst um 10 Uhr auf, es war aber noch lange nicht 10 Uhr. Also
bin ich los zum Kapitol, zur Union Station und von da aus mit einem Bus, der den ganzen Tag die wichtigsten Punkte der Mall abfährt, zum National Museum of
Natural History, dem Naturkundemuseum. Für mich ehrlich gesagt leider eine Enttäuschung. Recht klein, wenig Exponate und einiges gesperrt.
Von da aus ging es zum Washington Monument, zum 2. Weltkrieg Memorial, zum Reflecting Pool und schließlich zum
Lincoln Memorial.
Das Washington Monument ist leider bis 2019 geschlossen, da hier der Fahrstuhl erneuert wird. Schade, ich hatte mich auf den Ausblick auf Washington von oben gefreut. Vor dem Washington Monument habe ich dann noch ein Paar aus Oklahoma getroffen. Sie sind auf mich aufmerksam geworden, da ich mein Oklahoma Shirt an hatte, welches ich mir 2015 in OKC gekauft hatte.
Der Reflecting Pool ist ein langer flacher Pool. Ich hatte immer gedacht, dass der auch sauber sei. Aber er ist doch recht voll voller Entengrütze.
Das Lincoln Monument kennen viele sicher aus vielen Filmen, u.a. Transformers. Hier sitzt Lincoln auf einem riesigen Marmorstuhl in einem Gebäude. Auch eins der
typischen Washington D.C. Sehenswürdigkeiten.
Nach dem Mittag ging es dann weiter zum Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial und mit dem Bus wieder zurück zum Air and Space Museum. Auch hier wird
auf die einzelnen geschichtlichen Ereignisse (1. und 2. Weltkrieg etc.) eingegangen, aber auch wieder auf die Raumfahrt. Und hier steht sie: die USS Enterprise NCC-1701.

Da ich noch zum Weißen Haus wollte, habe ich mich hier nicht ganz so lange aufgehalten. Aber es ist wirklich der Besuch wert. Übrigens sind fast alle Museen vom
Smithsonian kostenlos, was ich eine tolle Sache finde.
Mit der Metro ging es dann zum Weißen Haus. Ich bin einmal komplett rumgelaufen, hab es also von der Vorder- als auch von der Rückseite gesehen. Viel Polizei, viel Bewachung. Aber ansonsten nicht
wirklich spektakulär.
Nach 9 Stunden auf den Beinen ging es nach einem Eis bei Baskin Robins zurück zum Hotel.
Das Wetter heute war sehr wechselhaft. Vormittag sehr schwül und leicht bewölkt. Nachmittag sehr heiß ohne Wolken und am Abend zogen wieder dunkle Wolken auf.
Morgen geht es dann nach Dover/Delaware und bei gutem Wetter an den Strand.
Day 2 in Washington.
Today I drove with the bus and the Metro, to drive with the Metro you need a SmarTrip Card, directly to Washington. The SmarTrip Card you can buy at selected CVS/pharmacy stores or at the Metro Station at Vending machines. I bought a Day Pass because the other choice was just a 7-Day Pass and a Month Pass. In the selected stores you also can buy a version which you can use as a Prepaid-Card.
Starting point in D.C. was the Smithsonian Castle, the Visitor Center at the Mall. The Mall isn't a Shopping Mall, it is a Mall where you can find all Smithsonian museums. But the Mall also connected the Washington Monument and the Capitol. At the Castle I've got a plan and then I wanted to start with the Air and Space Museum. But they open at 10 am and it was nowhere near at 10 am. So I walked down to the Capitol, to the Union Station and from there with a Bus, which is driving the whole day to all the important points of the Mall, to the National Museum of Nature History. But honestly it was disappointing for me. Small, less exhibits and a lot was closed.
From there I walked to the Washington Monument, the World War II Monument, the Reflecting Pool and finally to the Lincoln Memorial.
The Washington Memorial is closed till 2019 because they are renovating the elevator. Too bad because I looked forward to see the beautiful view of the City from above. In front of the Washington Monument I met a couple which is living in Oklahoma. They saw me because of my Oklahoma Shirt which I bought 2015 in OKC.
The Reflecting Pool is a long flat pool. I thought it will be a little bit cleaner. But it is full of duckweed.
Some will know the Lincoln Memorial from a lot of movies e.g. Transformers. Here sits Lincoln on a huge marble chair in a building. Also one of the typical Washington D.C. landmarks.
After lunch I walked to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and then with the bus back to the Air and Space Museum. Here you also can find the historical events (World War I & II etc.) but also the space programme. And here she stands: the USS Enterprise NCC-1701. This one is the original model which was used at all the episodes of the serie.
Because I wanted to see the White House I wasn't as long here. But it will be worth visiting. By the way almost every museum of Smithsonian is for free, that's a great thing!
With the Metro I drove to the White House. I walked once around it so I've seen the front and the back. A lot of police, a lot of guard. But nothing really spectacular.
After 9 hours on my feet I got back to the hotel after an ice cream at Baskin Robins.
The weather today was pretty changeable. At the morning sticky and cloudy. At the afternoon hot and without any clouds and at the evening there were some dark clouds. Tomorrow I'll drive to Dover/Delaware and with good weather a visit at the beach.
