Route 66

Planung, Tipps

Plans, Tips

I saved money for a long time to do this trip. At the beginning I wanted to plan every stop by myself. But it was the first time I've flown to the US. I bought some travel guides and read them, but the individual stops were planned by a travel agent. The most of them were really good. But there are some parts I don't agree with because some of them were not very interesting for me or were misplanned. For example there was an extra day in Albuquerque or a stop and a night in Tucumcari. In Tucumcari there is nothing. Really nothing. In my view you can drive to the next city. I had enough time for a drive to the next city. And in Los Angeles I only had the afternoon to see this city. It wasn't enough time.

After this journey and still now I promised myself to do this trip again. But then I'll plan the stops by myself. This Road has an enormous pull on me. However the planned trip was great and I can recommend it. You can find the offer on this site: usa-reisen.de.

This trip took 17 days. The 17th day was the day I flown back to Germany. Like the classic way I started in Chicago. To see a lot of points of interest and to drive most of the Route 66 I read a lot of travel guides. Currently the Route is really well-signposted, because this road is a Historic landmark. She is historically significant. So I guess that the signs will be there for a long time. At some points there aren't any signs but my guides helped me with this. With my guides and google maps I downloaded me the parts of the trip as a pdf and used them while I drove. I didn't had a GPS. But I recommend to use a GPS. Without you'll be distracted and only will concentrate on the description of the route you need to drive. But so you can't concentrate on the beautiful area and of course on the traffic. You could miss too much. Especially when you're driving alone.

My rental car was a midsize SUV. It was as expensive as a mid-size sedan but has more space. A midsize SUV is a car just like a Toyota RAV4, Audi Q3, Ford Edge and so on. The employee of the travel agent were I booked this tour told me to take the car on the third day when I'll drive from Chicago to Springfield. It was cheaper and I didn't have a parking slot at the hotel. And you can see Chicago by foot and by public transport. I rented the car at Alamo. I didn't have any problems. But you should watch out at the rental car station. The employees want to sell expensive additional goods and services.

Very important: Check your choosed car. They can hold you to account every unknown damage. Write down every little scratch or something else to save you!! And take some pictures.

I booked the flight by airberlin. Really cheap and it was a non stop flight from Berlin to Chicago. Back I flew from Los Angeles to Berlin with a stop in New York.

Tip: Have a look at your transfer time at the airport. I had 90 minutes in New York but my flight was delayed by 90 minutes in Los Angeles. I got lucky that the flight from New York to Berlin couldn't start on time and waited for us.

If you want to visit Las Vegas (like me) and want to try to take a stop at the Hoover Dam take a lot of time. Depending on the time of the day you have to wait at the end of a 2 mile line (or more) of cars.

On long trips take enough water with you. Especially if you drive through the desert. Please take water with you, no lemonade or something else!! Water helps a lot more than anything else.

And be sure that your tank is full of gas because there are some long parts where you can't find any gas stations. Getting stuck without gas is illegal and can be very dangerous in the desert.

However, if you want to do this tour, enjoy the planning and also the trip. If you have any questions don't hesitate to write me. I'll try to help you. ;)
