Fishermen's Wharf, Cable Car, Hyde Street Pier
Nachdem ich am ersten Tag sehr viel gelaufen bin und mir heute die Füße weh tun, wollte ich doch mal meinen City Pass nutzen und mit dem Cable Car fahren. Wer in San Francisco mit dem Cable Car fahren möchte, braucht viel Zeit und Geduld. Nicht weil die so langsam fahren, nein, sondern auf Grund der großen Wartezeit an den Stationen. Entweder man stellt sich bereits um 7 Uhr in der Früh an die Startstation oder man wartet. Da ich noch Briefmarken besorgen musste und bis 9 Uhr auf die Öffnung des Visitor Center warten musste, konnte ich mich nicht früher anstellen. Vor meiner Reise habe ich gehört, dass man sich an eine Station, die auf der Strecke liegt stellen soll und dort wartet. Am Startpunkt in der Powell St standen gegen 9 Uhr Morgens bereits um 50-60 Leute. Es verkehren von dort 2 Linien. Die Linien fahren in 10 Minuten Abständen. Leider ist es aber so, dass wenn jemand, der an der Reihe ist, aber nicht mit dieser sondern mit der anderen Linie fahren möchte, nicht jemand von weiter hinten genommen wird sondern einfach losgefahren wird. Somit kann sich die ganze Sache enorm ziehen. Ich habe eine Station weiter gewartet. Weiter hinten auf der Strecke hätte keinen Sinn gemacht. Nach einer halben Stunde und 4 vorbeifahrenden Cable Cars kam endlich eine, in der noch Platz war. Hier hatte ich noch Glück gehabt, dass es doch noch so schnell ging. Auf dem Weg zu Fisherman's Wharf, was heute mein Ziel ist, kamen wir u.a. auch an der berühmten Lombard Street vorbei. Die Lombard ist die, von der Länge her gesehen, kurvenreichste Straße der Welt, "the most crooked street in the world". Auf 145 Metern hat sie 10 Kurven. Bei der Rückfahrt wollte ich hier aussteigen und sie mir anschauen. Aber dazu später.
Am Ende der Linie war die Endstation Hyde Street. Hier liegt auch der Hyde St. Pier. An diesem Pier sind mehrere Schiffe angelegt. Aktuell sind zwei davon zu besichtigen. Ein alter Schlepper (Hercules) und ein altes Segelschiff (Balclutha). In der Balclutha konnte man auch unter Deck in den Frachtraum gehen. Sehr beeindruckend.
Danach gings die Straße runter Richtung Fisherman's Wharf. Viele Souvenirläden, Restaurants, Elektronikläden und Läden, in denen man Bootstouren kaufen kann. Fisherman's Wharf ist nicht umsonst als Touristenfalle bekannt. Hier muss man wirklich aufpassen, dass man nicht über den Tisch gezogen wird. Vieles sehr teuer. Die Souvenirläden, ich hab mindestens 8 gezählt auf einer Strecke von 1 km, haben alle genau die selben Dinge zu genau den selben Preisen. Schnäppchen kann man hier fast nicht machen. Ich hatte aber Glück und habe 2 T-Shirts für $25 statt für $30 bekommen. Auch gibt es hier einiges zu sehen. Sinnvolles aber auch sinnloses. Wie z.B. das Museé Mechanique. Ich hatte leider bei der Vorbereitung nicht viel darüber gefunden und war gespannt. Nach 5 Metern in diesem "Museum" war die Spannung weg. Man braucht hier keinen Eintritt bezahlen. Das Geld dafür wird mit alten Automaten reingeholt. Das gesamte Museum besteht aus Spieleautomaten. Für Nostalgiker mit Hang zu solchen Dingen wahrscheinlich sehr interessant. Aber wer keinen Bezug zu sowas hat und auch nicht spielen möchte, der macht einen großen Bogen drum.
An diesem Pier sind auch noch ein U-Boot und ein Kriegsschiff angelegt, die man beide von innen besichtigen kann. Ich habe sie mir nur von außen angeschaut, da ich noch einiges vor hatte. Ich wollte mir nämlich Ripley's Believe it or not anschauen. Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Ausstellung von Kuriositäten. U.a. ein aus Reifenstücken gefertigtes Mammut oder ein Spaceshuttle gebaut aus Streichhölzern oder Menschen mit Mutationen. Es ist ein Museum mit sehr viel Trash. Interessant anzuschauen, aber mit $25 Eintritt überteuert und nicht zu empfehlen. Nach 30 Min war ich dort auch durch. Mittag gab es heute bei In-N-Out Burger. Sage und schreibe 3 ganze Burger zur Auswahl.... Vom Preis her ähnlich wie McDonalds und Burger King, vom Geschmack aber viel besser. Nach dem Essen habe ich mich dann ans Wasser auf eine Bank gesetzt und mich für gute 2 Stunden ausgeruht und dem Treiben zugeschaut. Sehr entspannend. Zu guter Letzt bin ich einen alten Steg entlang und konnte hier sowohl die Stadt als auch Alcatraz etwas genauer betrachten. Bei der Stadt sieht man von hier aus schön die Unterschiede zwischen dem Bankenviertel (mehr Geld) und dem alten Teil der Stadt (weniger Geld). Ich bin auf die Skyline bei Nacht gespannt.
Alcatraz sieht sehr interessant aus. Montag ist es dann soweit. Leider konnte man auch heute wieder die Golden Gate Bridge nicht sehen bzw. nur einen kleinen Teil, da wieder Nebel aufgezogen ist. Dieser schafft es aber auch nur bis zur Hälfte der Bucht, dann verflüchtigt er sich.
In einigen Reiseführern habe ich den Tipp gelesen, man solle doch einen Milchshake am Ghirardelli Square trinken. Der Ghirardelli Square ist nach der Schokoladenfabrik Ghirardelli benannt. Gegründet 1852 in San Francisco ist sie die zweitälteste Schokoladenfabrik der USA. Seit 1998 gehört sie zu Lindt. Schokolade ist auch heute noch das Hauptprodukt der Firma. Die Shakes sind sehr teuer. Ich habe einen kleinen genommen mit Schoko und Karamell. Knapp über $6 habe ich bezahlt. Da aber bei den Amerikanern das small nicht small sondern eher medium ist, geht der Preis soweit in Ordnung. Ein guter halber Liter leckerer Milchshake. Wohlgemerkt, small!! Hier in Deutschland bekommt man bei small 200 - 250 ml. 😁 Ich kann nur empfehlen hier einen Milchshake zu probieren. Man hat auch eine große Auswahl.
Nun wollte ich wieder zurück mit dem Cable Car und an der Lombard Street Halt machen. Ja... Ich wollte. Die Schlange der wartenden war bestimmt 200 m lang. Ich habe mir dann eine Straßenbahn gesucht und bin mit der zurück zum Hotel. Die Lombard Street lass ich mir dann für einen anderen Tag. Mal sehen was mich morgen alles erwartet.
After the long walk on day 1 and my burning feet, I wanted to use the City Pass and I wanted to take the Cable Car. Everybody who wants to take the Cable Car needs a lot of time and patience. Not only because they are driving pretty slow, no, because you have to wait a long time till you can take a Cable Car. You can choose if you go to the starting point at 7am or if you want to wait. I had to buy some stamps so I had to wait till 9am when the Visitor Center opened. I heard that it is even better when you wait at a station on the route of the Cable Car. At the starting point at the Powell St were at 9am 50 - 60 people waiting to take the Cable Car. From this station there are 2 lines. Between each line there are 10 minutes to wait. But if one person can go into the Cable Car but this person want to take the other line, the Cable Car doesn't wait for another person in the row, it starts his drive. I've waited one station away from the starting point. After half an hour and 4 Cable Car passing me, one Cable Car arrived and I could step in. I got lucky that it didn't took so many time.
Today I wanted to visit Fisherman's Wharf. On the way to Fisherman's Wharf we passed the Lombard Street. The Lombard Street is 'the most crooked street in the world'. On 145 meter the street has 10 curves. On my way back from Fisherman's Wharf to the hotel I planned to stop here. But later more.
At the end of this line we were at the Hyde St and the Hyde St Pier. At this pier are several ships. Currently you can see 2 of them from the inside. An old tug (Hercules) and an old sailing ship (Balclutha). At the inside of the Balclutha you can see the cargo area, too. Very impressive. Then I walked down the street to Fisherman's Wharf. A lot of souvenir shops, restaurants, electronic shops and shops where you can buy several boat trips. Now I know why Fisherman's Wharf is called a tourist trap. You have to pay attention of what you do or buy. Some things are really expensive. You can't really find some hot-deals. But I found one. I bought 2 shirts on a price of $25 instead of $30. You can also see a lot of things here. For example the museé mechanique. Unfortunately I couldn't find some informations about it. I was really excited to see it. But after a few feet the excitement was gone. You don't have to pay any admission. They make the money with these old coint machines you can play with. For someone who like something like this, it is really exciting. But for someone who don't care about things like this shouldn't go into this museum. At this pier there were also a submarine and a battleship which you can see from the inside. But I hadn't have enough time becaue I wanted to visit Ripley's Believe it or not. There you can see a lot of curious things like a mammoth made with parts of old tires or a spaceshuttle made with matchsticks or people with mutations. Very interesting to see but with a price of $25 too expensive and I can't suggest it. After 30 minutes I've seen the whole museum.
At lunch I ate at In-N-Out Burger. They just have 3 Burgers to choose... The price was nearly the same like McDonalds or Burger King but the taste was even better.
After lunch I rested at the water front on a bench for 2 hours and I watched the people passing by. Really relaxing. At the end I walked down an old landing stage. I could see the city and Alcatraz. At the city you can see the differences between financial district (much money) and the old part (less money). I'm really excited to see the skyline at night. Alcatraz looks pretty good. Monday I'm gonna visit Alcatraz. Unfortunately I couldn't see the Golden Gate Bridge because of the fog. Just some parts of it. But not the whole bridge.
I've read that you have to taste a milkshake from Ghirardelli at the Ghirardelli Square. Ghirardelli is a chocolate factory founded in 1852 in San Francisco. It's the second oldest in the US. Since 1998 it belongs to Lindt. Chocolate is still the maine product of the company. The shakes are really expansive. I choosed a small one with chocolate and caramel. I paid more than $6. But here in america small is not the same as in Germany. Here I got 500ml. In Germany you get 200 - 250 ml when you choose a small shake. Also the price is ok. I can recommend to taste a shake here. You have a lot of different shakes to choose.
Now I wanted to take the Cable Car back to my hotel. But there was a row of almost 200 meter of waiting people. I took a streetcar back to my hotel. I hope I can see the Lombard Street on another day. Let's see what I can expect tomorrow.
