Pier 39
Auch im Urlaub sollte man flexibel sein und einen Plan B in der Hinterhand haben. Eigentlich war für heute die Radtour von Fisherman's Wharf über die Golden Gate Bridge bis nach Sausalito und zurück mit der Fähre geplant. Leider wollte aber das Wetter nicht mitspielen. Es war heute sehr stark bewölkt und leicht genieselt hat es auch. An den letzten Tagen war es morgens zwar auch bewölkt, aber spätestens um 10 Uhr wichen die Wolken der Sonne. Heute nicht. Da es auch so aussah, als ob sich das heute nicht großartig ändern würde, habe ich umdisponiert und die Tour auf morgen verschoben. Ich hoffe, dass das Wetter morgen mitspielt. Ich hab mich so drauf gefreut.
Also habe ich einen Teil von Montag vorgezogen: Besuch an Pier 39 inkl. Aquarium of the Bay. Auch hierfür hatte ich einen Gutschein für einen kostenlosen Eintritt, der im City Pass enthalten war. Also bin ich wieder mit der Historic Streetcar zum Pier 39 und ins Aquarium. Es wird sehr stark angepriesen, ist aber wirklich sehr klein. Schön ist die Unterwasserwelt mit verschiedenen Fischarten, Haien, Stachelrochen etc. Hier läuft man durch eine Röhre inmitten des Wassers, so dass die Fische um einen herum geschwommen sind. Das war dann auch schon die unterste Etage. Auf der zweiten Etage waren Seeotter, Schildkröten, Seesterne und eine Schlange ausgestellt. Ja, EINE Schlange.... Was etwas Abwechslung in die ganze Sache bringt, sind Liveevents. Wer sich dafür interessiert verbringt hier eine Menge Zeit. Leider aber auch mit Warten. Wenn man nicht für ein Liveevent dort bleibt, ist man auch schon fertig mit dem Rundgang. Nach nicht einmal 30 Min für $25 regulärer Eintritt.... Aber ich hatte ja den City Pass und somit freien Eintritt. 😁
Also gings wieder zurück zum Pier 39. Der Pier 39 besteht eigentlich nur aus Restaurants, Imbissbuden und vielen Souvenirläden. U.a. findet man hier sehr viele Bekleidungsshops, aber auch Schmuckläden und die ganz normalen Ramschläden. Was ich sehr interessant fand, ist ein Shop, der signierte Sachen verkauft. Angefangen von Autogrammkarten über Poster bis hin zu Superbowlringen, Wackelkopffiguren oder auch eine original von Ronaldo getragene Sporthose. Die Preise lassen sich sehen. Oder man rennt einfach wieder schreiend aus dem Laden. Hier werden Poster verkauft mit Originalunterschriften von $1,000 aufwärts. U.a. ist hier auch ein Poster von William Shatner und Leonard Nimoy für $950. Nicht ganz meine Preisklasse.
Auch etwas Entertainment wird den Leuten geboten. In der Mitte des Pier steht eine Bühne, auf der Künstler ihre Programme vorstellen. Eins habe ich mir noch teilweise anschauen können. Hier hat der Künstler sich von zwei Zuschauern in eine Zwangsjacke stecken lassen und hat den Leuten auf witzige Art und Weise seine "Flucht" vorgeführt.
Auch sind hier extra Pontons für Seelöwen angebracht. Im Sommer sind aber nur sehr wenige zu sehen, da die meisten weiter südlich schwimmen um ihre Jungen zu bekommen. Ein paar waren heute dennoch zu sehen. Und die machen einen Lärm...
Wem dann irgendwann der Hunger plagt, hat ihr eine große Auswahl. Da ich schon sehr viel über Bubba Gump Shrimp gehört habe, wollte ich das ausprobieren. Wer Forrest Gump kennt, dem wird auch Bubba Gump ein Begriff sein. Wer aber nun denkt, dass der Film eine bereits bestehende Restaurantkette bewirbt, der irrt. Die Restaurantkette wurde nämlich durch den Film inspiriert und 1996 von Viacom gegründet. Der Film kam 1994 raus. Die Kette ist sehr beliebt und auch darum wahrscheinlich sehr teuer. Ein Sandwich mit Shrimps und ein Getränk kosteten mich inkl. Trinkgeld $30. Aber es war sehr lecker. Probieren kann man ja. 😁 Und ich konnte das beleuchtete Plastikglas behalten.
Nach dem Essen, so gegen 13 Uhr kam dann doch endlich die Sonne raus. Jetzt war es aber für die Radtour zu spät. Ich hätte die letzte Fähre nicht mehr bekommen um von Sausalito zurück zu fahren. Naja, aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben. Morgen ein neuer Versuch und auch der letzte. 😁
Also bin ich am Wasser noch etwas in Richtung Oakland Bay Bridge gelaufen. Hier kann man tolle Blicke auf die Skyline werfen. Auch hier muss ich wieder sagen: San Francisco ist eine sehr schöne Stadt.
Durch das Vorziehen des Pier 39 und des Aquariums, habe ich Montag noch etwas Zeit, um mir die Lombard Street anzuschauen.
Even in your holidays you have to be flexible and it is good to have a plan B. Today I planned to do the Bike Tour from Fisherman's Wharf, crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and back with the ferry. But the weather was bad. It was very cloudy and it drizzled a little bit. On the last days it was cloudy, too. But no later than 10 am the sun came out. But not today. It looked like it wouldn't get better so I decided to switch the tour on tomorrow. I hope that the weather will be better. I looked so much to do this.
So I took a part of monday to today. A visit at Pier 39 and the Aquarium of the Bay. Even I had a Coupon for this in my City Pass. I took the Historic Streetcar again and drove to Pier 39 and the Aquarium. You can hear about the Aquarium a lot of good things. But it is really small. Very good is the underwater world with several kinds of fishes, sharks, stingray and so on. You're walking through a tube in the water, so the fishes can swim around you. That is on the first level, which is also the lowest level, you can visit. On the second level you can see some sea otter, turtles, starfish and one snake. Yes, ONE snake.... There is a little variety with some live events. If you like this you can stay there for a long time. Unfortunately for waiting, too. If you don't want to see these live events you're done with the complete visit. After less than 30 minutes and $25 regular admission.... But I had the City Pass and with it free admission.
So I went back to Pier 39. Pier 39 has a lot of restaurants, snack stands and gift shops. You can find a lot of clothes shops but also some jewelry and the known junk shops. One shop is really interesting. There you can buy signed stuff like autograph cards or posters and rings from the Superbowl this year, some bobblehead dolls and worn trousers by Ronaldo. The prices are interesting, too. Or you can run out of the store loud screaming. They are selling signed posters for more than $1,000. For example they have a poster with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy with a price of $950. Not my price range.
At the middle of the Pier they have some entertainment. Some artists are showing their programs. One of them I watched. The artist got two people of the audience to put him in a straitjacket. He showed the audience on a funny way his 'escape' out of this straitjacket.
Also there are some patoons for the sea lions. In summer there are just some of them because the most of the sea lions are on a travel to the south to give birth. Today you could see some sea lions. And they are making noise...
When you get hungry you have a big choice of restaurants. I heard a lot of Bubba Gump Shrimp so I wanted to taste it. Everyone who knows Forrest Gump knows Bubba Gump, too. But if you think the movie did some commercial brake of Bubba Gump, that is not true. Bubba Gump was inspired by the movie and founded in 1996 by Viacom. The movie is from 1994. These restaurants are very popular and because of this also really expensive. I had a sandwich with shrimps and a drink. I paid $30 including tip. But it was pretty good. And I could keep the lighted plastic glas.
After lunch the sun came out. It was 1 pm. But now it was too late to do the bike tour because I wouldn't catch the ferry from Sausalito back to Pier 39. New try tomorrow. :)
I walked down the street at the water front to the Oakland Bay Bridge. Here you have great views of the skyline. I have to say again: San Francisco is a beautiful city.
Because of visiting Pier 39 and the Aquarium I have enough time on monday to see the Lombard Street.
