BART

Die BART ist ein Art S-Bahn, die Bay Area Rapid Transit. Mit dieser Bahn kommst Du u.a. vom San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in die Stadt, aber auch in die East Bay. Hier u.a. zum Walnut Creek, Oakland. Es gibt insegsamt 5 Linien. Die BART ist die günstigste Variante um vom Airport in die Stadt zu kommen. Die Fahrt kostet ca. $10 (9 €). Taxi ist um einiges teurer. Die Fahrt dauert je nach dem wo man aussteigt, eine gute halbe Stunde.

Cable Car

Das oder auch die Cable Car sind eine der Sehenswürdigkeiten von San Francisco und ein bewegliches National Historic Landmark. Gestartet am 01. September 1873 hat sie viele Höhen aber auch viele Tiefen erlebt, wie z.B. die großen Erdbeben. 1906 wurden fast alle Strecken zerstört. Heute gibt es noch drei Linien:

  • The Powell - Hyde
  • The Powell - Mason
  • The California Street

Eine Fahrt hatte 2016 noch ca. $2 gekostet. Aktuell (2019) kostet eine Fahrt $7. Dieser Preis gilt nur für eine Fahrt. Steigst Du aus und willst in ein anderes Cable Car wechseln, werden wieder $7 Dollar fällig. Seit 01.04.2019 musst Du im Voraus das Ticket kaufen. Das kannst Du an verschiedenen Ticketkiosks in der Stadt machen. Es gibt aber auch die Möglichkeit Tages- und Wochenkarten zu kaufen. Diese gelten dann für den gesamten Muni, Muni Metro, die historischen Straßenbahnen und die Cable Cars. Die Preise variieren je nachdem welchen Kartentyp Du kaufts und auch wie Du ihn kaufst (MuniMobile, Clipper etc.).

Du kannst aber auch ein Cable Car oder eine der historischen Straßenbahnen chartern.

Die Cable Cars sind nicht besonders schnell, aber ein tolles Fortbewegungsmittel. Man kann sowohl innen sitzen, als auch außen auf den Trittbrettern der Einstiege stehen.

Du solltest Dir auf jeden Fall genug Zeit nehmen. Das Warten an den Stationen, im Besonderen an den Anfangs- und Endstationen, kann sehr lange dauern. Beginn der Fahrten ist 7 Uhr. Sollte es an den Anfangsstationen zu voll sein, kann es manchmal auch hilfreich sein, bis zur nächsten oder vielleicht auch übernächsten Station zu laufen und dort zu warten. Je nachdem wie weit die nächste Station entfernt ist.

An den Zwischenstationen ist es nämlich gar nicht so ungewöhnlich, dass hier der ein oder andere wieder aussteigt und dann Platz für Dich ist. Anders als an den Anfangsstationen. Hier werden nämlich die Bahnen erst einmal komplett vollgestopft. Aber sie werden auch nicht überfüllt. Die max. Plätze werden penibel eingehalten. Man kann jederzeit an jeder Station wieder aussteigen oder dazu steigen. Die Cable Cars halten an jeder Station auf ihrer Route.

 

Presidio Shuttle

Es gibt sogar eine Möglichkeit kostenlos durch zumindest einen Teil von San Francisco mit den Öffis zu fahren: das Presidio Shuttle, auch PresidiGO genannt.

Es werden insgesamt drei Routen zur verfügung gestellt:

  • PresidiGO Downtown
  • PresidiGO Around the Park mit den Routen Crissy Field und Presidio Hills

Alle Routen sind im Grunde kostenlos. Nur bei der Downtown gibt es Zeiten, in denen man nur mit einem PresidiGO Pass oder Muni Pass mitfahren darf. Diese Zeiten beschränken sich aber auf die Zeiten des Berufsverkehres. Die Downtown Route ist auch die längste. Mit ihr kommt man sogar bis zur Embarcadero BART Station.

Die Crissy Field Route führt, wie der Name schon sagt, zum und ums Crissy Field, aber auch unter der Golden Gate Bridge durch.

Die dritte Route, die Presidio Hills führt eben durch die Presidio Hills, aber auch zum Baker Beach.

BART

BART is a subway. The Bay Area Rapid Transit. With these trains you'll get among others from the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) into the city. But also to the East Bay. Here you'll get among others to Walnut Creek or also to Oakland. You'll find about five lines. BART is the most favorable kind of travelling from the airport to the city. One trip cost about $10. To drive with the cab will be more expensive. The drive with BART will take about 30 minutes. It depends on where you'll get out.

Cable Car

The Cable Car is one of the sights in San Francisco and it is a moveable National Historic Landmark. Started on September 1st, 1873 it got through so many ups and downs e.g. the big earthquake. 1906 almost every line was destroyed. Today you'll find three lines:

  • The Powell - Hyde
  • The Powell - Mason
  • The California Street

In 2016 on trip cost about §2. Currently (2019) one trip cost about $7. This price is for one ride. If you get out and want to change in another Cable Car you have to pay another $7. Since April 1, 2019 you must purchase a ticket in advance of boarding. You can buy it at several ticket kiosk in the city. You also can buy day and week passports. With them you can ride the whole Muni, Muni Metro, historical streetcars and the cable cars. The prices may be different in case which pass you choose and how you'll pay it (MuniMobile, Clipper...)

And you can charter a cable car or a historical streetcar.

The Cable Car isn't pretty fast but an amazing way to get through the city. You can sit but also stand on the outisde on the footsteps of the entry.

But take enough time with you to travel with the Cable Car. Waiting at the stations specifically at the start and ending stations could take so much time. The Cable Car starts at 7:00 a.m. If there are too much people at the starting station it could be helpful to walk to the next station on this line or sometimes to the after next to wait there. It depends on how far away the next stations are. At the stations on the line people will get out and you'll find a seat. As against to the starting station. Here all Cars will be 'filled up'. But there are uncrowded. They are watching on the maximum of the capacity. You can leave the cars on any station on the route or get in. The cable cars are stopping at every station on their route.

 

Presidio Shuttle

In San Francisco you also can find a possibility to get through a part of the city with the public transportation for free: the Presidio Shuttle, also called PresidiGO.

You can use three routes:

  • PresidiGO Downtown
  • PresidiGO Around the Park with the routes Crissy Field and Presidio Hills

Every route is for free. Except the Downtown route at several times. At these times you only can ride on that route with the PresidiGO Pass or the Muni Pass. These times are at the rush-hour traffic times. The Downtown route is the longest one. You can get with it also to the Embarcadero BART station.

The Crissy Field route goes as the name says, to and around the Crissy Field and also under the Golden Gate Bridge.

The third route, the Presidio Hills, goes to the Presidio Hills but also to the Baker Beach.
