Bike the Bridge

Bike the Bridge

That was one of my highlights on my San Francisco vacation. To bike the bridge. When you think about, do it. It is an awesome experience. Something you need to do when you're in San Francisco. On the one hand it is so impressive to cross the bridge with a bike and on the other hand the way through San Francisco and the small coastal town called Sausalito. The way is easy and pretty relaxed. Except the uphill stages. 😁 But there are some things you need to pay attention for.

Rent the bike

In San Francisco you can find several suppliers to rent a bike. While I'm there, I've seen three suppliers very often:

Blazing Saddles has the most stations in San Francisco. The prices are the same at everyone of this three supplier. For the way back from Sausalito there are just Blazing Saddles and Bay City Bike who offer a ticket for the ferry from Sausalito to San Francisco. Bike & View doesn't offer a ticket to my knowledge.

At all suppliers you can do a self-guided tour or a guided tour. And everyone offer several tours like a tour through the parks, Marin Headlands and also to Tiburon.

The prices starting at $8 per hour for the most favorable bike. The rental fare for 24 h starts at $32. But have a look at the homepages of every supplier to find good discounts. Or have a look at the flyer you can find at the Visitor Center or in your hotel. There are often some coupons in it with which you can save some money.

In 2016 when I was there, the price was the same as now. Except the ticket of the ferry. In 2016 I payed at Blazing Saddles $10 for the ticket. A ticket at the kiosk in Sausalito has cost $12.50 (as currently, too). And you can avoid the line and be one of the first on the ferry when you bought your ticket at one of the supplier.

Currently you have to pay at Blazing Saddles $13 and at Bay City Bike $14.50. So it is more expensive as in 2016.

Blazing Saddles says that you'll need about 1.5 hour incl. the way back with the ferry. But not in my eyes. I recommend about 4 to 4 1/2 hours. Because you want to ride slow-paced, take some pictures and do some breaks. You want to enjoy the ride and don't want to stress yourself.

By the rent at the location don't let yourself be ruffle. The employees want to bring as much bikes as possible on the streets and trying to serve every customers as fast as they can. Read the conditions and don't stress yourself. Have attention which bike they want to give you. It should be the one you wanted resp. you've booked online.

Before you start you can try your bike if everything fits and you can ride it.

At every supplier you get bikes with Comfy Seat, Bell, Camera Bag, Lock, Map Holder, Suspension, Disc-Brakes and as an option a helmet. But everyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. Everyone over 18 can choose.

And now you can start.

Bike the Bridge

On the way to the bridge you'll pass some amazing points which are worth the stop. Among others you'll see Fort Mason, Aquatic Park and you can see the Palace of Fine Arts but also Fort Point and the Vista Point are worth the stop. At some stages you need to walk your bike because it is too steep. If you can ride your bike these stages, congrats to your fitness. But it isn't a disgrace when you walk your bike up the hill. 😁

Reaching the bridge you need to pay attention on which site you have to cross the bridge (East or West):

  • East (site to the city): Weekdays daylight to 3:30 PM
  • West (site to the Pacific Ocean): Weekdays 3:30 PM to dark, Weekends & Holidays  all day

Because you can cross the bridge in both directions keep your head up and have a look at the two-way traffic. The way is pretty wide but pay attention and keep an eye on the other people crossing the bridge. You also can stop on the bridge to take some pictures. Try to do this between the pillar of the bridge because there is much more space than at the pillar.

At the end you can ride down on both sites in direction to Sausalito. To Sausalito and the ferry it is a pretty good ride because there are enough signs to find the way.

A personal request:

If you want to cross the bridge with your child please pay attention that your child also want to do this and that it isn't afraid. If it don't want to cross the bridge and is so much afraid please don't do this ride and don't constrain your child. Both sites of the way are fenced off but children could be so much afraid because the cars are driving on the one site and on the other site there is the abyss. On my tour I saw a dad with his little daughter. He constrained his daughter to do this. And she was crying from the still beginning. At the end of the bridge she broke down crying. I don't have children but to see this broke my heart. Because of the love to your children don't do this when your child is afraid of doing the crossing. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Back with the ferry

The best way back from Sausalito is taking the ferry. The ferry departures every 60 to 90 minutes. The last one departures at 7:20 PM. You can find the schedule here.

You also can ride back over the bridge. But after a tour like this exhausting one you can relax a little bit on the ferry. The bikes are under deck. Please lock it and take your belongings with you up to the deck. Here you have an amazing view to the city and also Alcatraz.

Back at the rental station you give back the bike and pay the fare. Except you've paid it online.

For myself it was so much fun and I'll do this again for sure.

Do you have any questions? Don't hesitate and write me. You can use the Guestbook.

Now, I wish you a lot of fun RIDING THE BRIDGE! 😁
