Tag 1 / Day 1 - 03.09.2023
Auf geht's nach Florida. Das erste Mal. Nach Langem mal wieder etwas völlig Neues sehen.
Das Anstrengende an USA Reisen ist immer das frühe Aufstehen und die lange Flugzeit. Da man vom großen "internationalen" Flughafen BER keine Direktflüge hat, bzw. nicht mehr hat, ging es erst einmal nach Frankfurt. Aufstehen um halb 4 und Ankunft BER um halb 6. Koffer abgeben, wenn man mit Lufthansa fliegt, ist super einfach. Es stehen dort Automaten, bei denen man nur seinen Reisepass einscannen braucht, ggf. noch einen Sitzplatz aussucht und schon bekommt man das Gepäcklabel. Das hängt man am besten an den Griff an der langen Seite des Koffers, legt diesen auf das Gepäckband an den Schaltern nebenan und fertig.
Dann steht nur noch die Security an. Im BER gibt es mehrere Schalter, an denen man sich anstellen kann. Ich habe dieses Jahr das sog. Runway ausprobiert. Man bucht sich vorab einen Zeitslot und hat dann 10 Minuten davor und danach Zeit sich mit dem Flugticket anzustellen. Hier ist es zwar mitunter auch sehr voll, aber es geht schneller. Ich war nach gut 20 Minuten durch. Insgesamt von Ankunft bis ich meine Sachen wieder hatte, 40 Minuten. Super!
Der Flug nach Frankfurt war unspektakulär und auch noch schneller erledigt als vorausgesagt. Dafür hatten wir dann aber in Frankfurt 1 Stunde Verspätung, da die
ewig gebraucht haben um die Maschine vorzubereiten… Und dann 9 Stunden im Flieger aushalten bis wir dann ggn. 15:45 Uhr Ortszeit in Miami gelandet sind. Aber auch die Immigration war extrem
langsam. Auch nochmal gut 45 Minuten gebraucht bis ich durch war. Die immer wiederkommende Frage was ich hier machen möchte. Dann kamen zwei neue Fragen: Bin ich alleine oder mit jemand anderem
unterwegs? Und wie lautet das erste Hotel in dem ich übernachte? Alles zur Zufriedenheit beantwortet und nach Abnahme aller Fingerabdrücke und Foto konnte ich dann weiter.
Auf meinen Koffer musste ich auch etwas warten, aber dann ging es zu Hertz den Mietwagen abholen. Da ich ein Komplettpaket gebucht hatte, hatte man mich nur noch gefragt, ob ich eine Mautrate haben möchte. Da ich Mautstellen aber umfahre, spare ich mir das Geld. Dann durfte ich mir einen Mietwagen aussuchen. Aus einer unendlichen Masse an Fahrzeugen……. Ganz genau 2….. Zwei SUV. Ich hatte mir dann einen Hyundai Kona ausgesucht. In dem hat es aber so dermaßen nach Gras gerochen, dass ich überlegt habe solange zu warten bis neue Fahrzeuge reinkommen. In dem Moment kam Gott sei Dank auch ein Toyota RAV 4. Den hab ich dann auch genommen. Ich hatte zwar auf einen Dodge Charger spekuliert, aber der RAV4 ist auch super.
Dann ging es nur noch 1,5 Stunden zum Hotel und kurz zu Walmart etwas Verpflegung holen. Somit war dann der Anreisetag geschafft.
Heute am ersten kompletten Tag in Florida war ich um 4 Uhr wach. Frühstück gab es dann gegen 7 Uhr. Ich bin dann mit dem Auto rein nach Miami, um mir die Stadt
etwas anzuschauen. Parken in Miami, wie in so gut wie jeder Großstadt, ist schwierig und sehr teuer. Ich hatte mir im Vorhinein an einem Market Center ein Parkhaus gesucht. Das sollte dann aber
$10 die Stunde kosten....
Zwei Blocks weiter gab es dann einen öffentlichen Parkplatz. Hier konnte ich mit dem Handy bezahlen. Am Ende für 8 Stunden $25 fand ich echt günstig.
Von da bin ich direkt am Wasser erst einmal durch einen kleinen Dogs & Cats Walkway gelaufen. Eine Kunstinstallation mit einigen Hunde- und Katzenfiguren. Weiter hat mich der Weg an dem eben genannten Market Center vorbeigeführt. Um 9 Uhr morgens an einem Sonntag noch total leer.
Am Freedom Tower vorbei bin ich dann Richtung Flagler Street gelaufen. Der Freedom Tower ist ein 1925 im mediterranen Baustil erbautes Gebäude, das an die kubanische Immigration erinnern soll. Heute wird das Gebäude als Museum und teilweise auch als Kunstgalerie genutzt.
Die Flagler Street soll allgemein als Shopping Meile bekannt sein. Naja, ich sags mal so, in diesem Gebiet war es so ruhig und menschenleer, da hatte ich letztes Jahr in der Wüste mehr erlebt. Alle Geschäfte waren zu. Ich bin dann nach einem kurzen Stück Richtung Calle Ocho gelaufen. Hier sind viele lateinamerikanische Geschäfte angesiedelt und ein Teil davon wird als Little Havana bezeichnet. War aber auch nicht wirklich aufregend und ich bin dann zurück Richtung Bucht (Bayside) gelaufen.
Ein kleines Stück bin ich mit dem sogenannten Metro Mover gefahren. Das sind kleine Züge, die völlig autonom ohne einen Fahrer ihre Runden drehen. Schon komisch, wenn da niemand am Steuer sitzt und es nicht mal ein gibt.
Da ich noch den Riverwalk lang laufen wollte, bin ich an der namensgebenden Haltestelle ausgestiegen.
Am Riverwalk sind viele sehr teure Geschäfte, Hotels und Restaurants. Dementsprechend sieht man das ein oder andere hochpreisige Gefährt, sowohl Land als auch Wasser, dort stehen oder eben liegen.
Zurück in Bayside habe ich eine Art des Cuban Sandwiches gegessen. Ein Baguette mit Schinken, einer Art gegrilltem Schweinefleisch, Käse und saure Gurken. War sehr lecker, aber zu viel. Den Rest habe ich mir einpacken lassen.
Da die Sonne heute mit voller Kraft geschien hat und wir so um die 32°C hatten, bin ich zurück zum Auto und wieder zum Hotel. War auch gut so, denn dann zogen dunkle Wolken auf.
Ich habe heute aber dennoch alles gesehen was ich sehen wollte.
Morgen geht es dann ins Frost Science Museum (das mittlerweile dritte, welches ich in den USA besuche), evtl. eine ganze Runde mit dem Metro Mover drehen und in den Stadtteil Wynwood, der in den letzten Jahren einen ordentlichen Aufschwung erlebt hat.

Let's go to Florida. The first time. After a long time something new on my list.
The most exhausting thing on travels to the US is to get up so early in the morning and the long flight. Because you can't get a direct flight from our big "international" airport BER, I had to head to Frankfurt. Getting up at half past 3 am and arrival at the BER at half past 5 am. Baggage drop off is pretty easy when you're flying with Lufthansa. There are some self check in stations where you scan your passport maybe choose a seat and then you get your label. That label you attach on the handle on the long side of your suitcase, put the suitcase on the baggage belt at the counter and you're done.
Next is the security check. At the BER there are several counter for the security check. I've tried the so called Runway this year. You book a time slot in advantage and then you have ten minutes before and after your slot to check in with your flight ticket. It could be still pretty busy there but it is much faster. I was done after 20 minutes. Overall from my arrival at the airport until I got my things back it took me about 40 minutes. Great!
The flight to Frankfurt wasn't pretty spectacular and faster than expected. But in Frankfurt we had a delay of an hour. They needed so long to get the airplane ready... And then 9 hours waiting on the flight to arrive at 3:45 pm in Miami. And also the immigration was sooo slow. It took me about 45b minutes to get through. The question that always come up: What are you doing here? But then there were two new questions I've never been asked: Do I travel alone or in company? And what's the first hotel I'll sleep? All questions answered to satisfaction and taking all of my finger prints and a picture and I finally could go to the baggage claim.
I had to wait a bit to get my suitcase but then I could go to Hertz and pick up my rental car. Because I've booked the complete package they only asked if I want an Toll Pass. I'm gonna bypass the toll roads so I don't need it. And then I finally could choose my car. You could say one in a million. Yeah, there were two cars to choose.... two SUV. I choosed a Hyundai Kona. But it smelled so much of dope. I thought about waiting till another car arrives. But at this moment a Toyota RAV 4 arrived. And this one I took. Although I wanted a Dodge Charger but that RAV4 is great, too.
Now I only had to drive about 1.5 hours to my hotel. I stopped at Walmart to buy some stuff. And with this the arrival day was done.
Today on the first complete day in Florida I woke up at 4 am. Breakfast was at 7 am. Then I drove with the car down to Miami to see the city. Parking in Miami is like parking in every big city. Hard and expensive. In advantage I found a parkin garage at a makret center. It should cost about $10/hour....
Two blocks from there I found a public parkin lot to pay by phone. I paid $25 for 8 hours. In my mind it is pretty favorable.
From there I walked at the waterfront but first through a Dogs & Cats Walkway. It's an art installation with some sculptures of dogs and cats. The way leads me to that market center. At 9 am at a sunday it was pretty empty there.
Passing the Freedom Tower I walked in direction to the Flagler Street. The Freedom Tower is build in mediterranean style in 1925 and it reminds at the cuban immigration. Today it is used as a museum and parts of it as an art gallery.
The Flagler Street is known as a shopping mile. Well, let me say it this way, in this area it was so quiet and empty of people I've experienced more in the desert last year. Every single shop was closed. After a short part I walked straight to the street called Calle Ocho. Here you can find a lot of latin american shops and restaurants and a part of it is called Little Havana. But it also wasn't really exciting and I walked in direction to the bay (Bayside).
I drove a small part of the way with the so called Metro Mover. The Metro Mover are small trains which are driving fully automatic without a driver. Pretty curious driving without any person sitting on the drivers seat and there also isn't a drivers seat.
Because I wanted to walk the Riverwalk I git out of the train at the naming station.
At the Riverwalk you can find a lot of very very expensive shops, hotels and restaurants. Accordingly you can see a few high priced vessel both land and water standing and docking there.
Back in Bayside I had a kind of a cuban sandwich. A baguette with ham, a kind of grilled pork, cheese and pickles. It was really delicious but as often to much. I put the rest in a box an took it with me.
Because the sun was shining with full power and we had around 92°F I walked back to the car and drove back to the hotel. And it was good because there came some dark clouds.
But I coukd see eveything I wanted to see. Tomorrow I will se the Frost Science Museum (the third one I visited in the US), maybe a round trip with the Metro Mover and a walk through Wynwood. An area which experienced a boost over the last few years.
