Route 66 - Edition 2022
Im Jahr 2014 hat es mich das allererste Mal überhaupt in die USA gezogen, und zwar auf die Route 66. Das erste Mal USA und dann gleich diese Tour über fast 3 Wochen. Man war ich aufgeregt, aber auch etwas ängstlich, da ich das alles alleine gemacht habe. Aber, es war der Beginn einer Liebe zu einem Land, die bis heute anhält.
Da sich mein Geburtstag nun zum 35. gejährt (2020) hatte, hatte ich beschlossen diese Tour erneut zu machen. Aber dieses Mal mit ein paar Änderungen. Leider kam nun Corona dazwischen und ich musste alles, was ich gebucht hatte wieder stornieren und meine Reise verschieben. Daher war 2020 das erste Jahr seit 2014 ohne USA-Urlaub, in der Hoffnung dies 2021 nachzuholen.
Leider haben sich meine Hoffnungen auch 2021 komplett zerschlagen. Die USA behalten den Travel Ban aufrecht. Somit ist es Personen, die 14 Tage vor Einreise in die
USA u.a. im Schengen Raum (wozu Deutschland gehört) gewesen sind, nicht erlaubt in die USA einzureisen. Da ich aber leider nicht unendlich viel Urlaub habe und ein Aufenthalt von mind. 14 Tagen
in einem "erlaubten" Gebiet auch das Budget sprengen würde, war ich dazu gezwungen die in 2021 erneut gebuchte Reise wieder komplett zu stornieren... Somit summiert sich die USA-Abstinenz aktuell
auf fast 3 Jahre.
Als dann Ende 2021 die USA den Travel Ban aufgehoben hatten und man nun (aktuell!) als komplett geimpfter plus Test wieder einreisen darf, hatte ich mich hingesetzt und die Route 66 Tour wieder in Angriff genommen und die Preise eingeholt. Flug und Hotels alles ganz ok. Preis leicht gestiegen. Flug nicht mal um 100 EUR und Hotels im Durchschnitt knapp 10 EUR. Aber die Mietwagen.... Ich bin ja aus allen Wolken gefallen als ich den Mietwagen berechnet habe. 14 Tage Chicago bis LA rund 2.000 EUR für eine Mittelklasse. Die Jahre davor waren es so um die 600 - 700 EUR. Da habe ich dann die Reise schon wieder halb in meinem Kopf gelöscht. Ich bin dann aber auf Ursachenforschung gegangen und habe den selben Zeitraum genommen, aber ohne Einwegmiete. Also Abgabe wieder in Chicago. Da war der Preis dann plötzlich bei den rund 700 EUR. Also haben die bei der Einwegmiete um die 1.300 EUR verlangt.
Nee, dachte ich. Für so gut wie nichts soviel Geld bezahlen? Niemals. Also überlegt was mache ich. Da ich definitiv meine Bekannten in Oklahoma besuchen möchte und wenigstens teilweise die 66 langfahren wollte, habe ich mich dazu entschieden eine Rundreise zu machen. Die Idee war von Chicago bis Oklahoma und dann über Kansas und Iowa wieder zurück. Zusätzlich eine Tagestour dann nach Indianapolis und zwei Tage nach Dearborn ins Henry Ford Museum. Der neue Plan stand, also habe ich alles gebucht. Preislich für so eine Tour vollkommen ok. Rund 3.000 EUR inkl. Midsize SUV.
Nun hatte es mich aber in den Fingern gekribbelt, da ich aus verschiedenen Richtungen gehört habe, dass die Mietwagen wohl wieder günstiger geworden sind. Also mal Preise checken. Und siehe da, da hat sich tatsächlich was getan. Der Midsize SUV, der vorher um die 2.000 EUR gekostet hat, kostet nun "nur" noch 1.200 EUR inkl. Einwegmiete. Immer noch viel aber ich habe dann geschaut was Oberklasse kostet. Der liegt bei 950 EUR. Wow, dachte ich, da musst du auch gleich mal die Hotels checken und schauen, auf wieviel du mehr kommst, wenn du nun doch die 66 fährst. Am Ende waren es dann ca. 600 EUR mehr. Ich habe eine Woche lang drüber nachgedacht und mich dann entschieden bei Lufthansa den Rückflug umzubuchen und diese 600 EUR mehr zu investieren. Das ist es mir definitiv wert. Gerade nach zwei Mal stornieren.
Zum Glück konnte ich den Rückflug auf LA umbuchen. Umbuchungskosten 58 EUR, was völlig ok ist. Dann die nun "falschen" Hotels und den Mietwagen storniert und die "richtigen" Hotels und den neuen Mietwagen gebucht. Zwar ist es nun kein SUV mehr, aber Oberklasse reicht völlig. Da ich das komplette Versicherungspaket bei Check24 genommen habe, kostet der Mietwagen nun 1.010 EUR inkl. Einwegmiete.
Und ich freue mich nun doch die komplette Tour zu fahren und Highlights wie den Petrified Forest und Grand Canyon zu sehen.
In 2014 I was the first time in my life in the US, on Route 66. The first time US and this trip about almost 3 weeks. Man, I was so excited but also a little bit scared because I did it alone. But it was the beginning of a love to a country which is still there.
Because my birthday has his 35th anniversary in 2020 I decided to do this trip again. But this time with some changes. Unfortunately Corona changed everything and I had to cancel everything I booked earlier this year and to postpone this trip. Because of this 2020 was the first year since 2014 without a vacation in the US with hoping to do it in 2021.
Unfortunately, my hopes have been completely dashed. The US didn't lift the Travel Ban. Because of this, it isn't allowed to entry in the US for people who were i.a. in the Schengen Area 14 days before the entry in the US. Because I don't have so much vacation days and a 14 day trip to a 'permitted' area would destroy my budget I have to cancel this trip completely which I booked again in 2021. Now the time without travelling to the US sum up to almost 3 years at all...
At the end of 2021 when the US lifted the Travel Ban and everyone who is vaccinated and negative tested can travel to the US I got back to the planning of my Route 66 Tour and checked the prices. The price of the flight and the hotels was pretty ok. They raised a little bit. the flight was about $120 more expensive and the hotel about $15 each compared with the prices in 2020. But the rental cars.... I fell from all clouds when I calculated the price. 14 days Chicago to LA was about $2,200 for a mid size car. At the years before the price was about $700 - $800. When I saw this I cancelled the trip in my mind. But I searched why the prices are so high and took the same time but without the one way fee. So with return in Chicago. The price was now about $800. So the rental agencies demanded a one way fee of about $1,400 . My thoughts were 'No, that I won't do." Paying so much for nothing? Never. Because of this I thought about what should I do. Because I definitive want to visit my second family in Oklahoma and to drive a little bit of Route 66 I decided doing a roundtrip. My idea was driving from chicago to Oklahoma and back over Kansas and Iowa. Additionally to this a day trip down ti Indianapolis and two days over to Dearborn, Michigan to the Henry Ford Museum. So, the plan was finished and I booked everything. The price over all with about $3,200 was pretty ok incl. a mid size SUV.
But now my fingers were tingling because I heard from different people that the rental fees got lower. And I checked the prices. And yes what can I say they are lower now. That mid size SUV I've booked got from $2,200 down to $1,400 incl. the one way fee. It was still a bit too much but I checked a upper class one. That car was about $1,000. Wow, that's awesome. Now I have to check the hotels and sum up everything to see how much more it would be if I drive the whole 66. At the end it was about $700 more. I thought about it a week and decided to do it. I changed my booked departured back to Berlin to LA and invest the $700 more. For me it is definitive worth the money. Just because I cancelled this trip twice.
Luckely I could change the flight back. The change cost me about $70. Thats pretty ok. Then I had to cancel the 'wrong' hotels and the rental car and book the 'correct' hotels and the new rental car. Now a upper class one and not a SUV but that's ok for me. Because I ordered the full insurence the rental car is about $1,100 incl. the one way fee.
I'm so happy to do the complete trip and see highlights such the Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon.
