Golden Gate Park, Painted Ladies
Ach ja, San Francisco wäre ohne Nebel wohl nicht San Francisco. 😁
Heute zog der Nebel sogar bis tief in die Stadt rein. Als ich gegen 9 Uhr aufgebrochen bin, lag noch dichter Nebel über und in San Francisco.
Für heute hatte ich einen Besuch im Golden Gate Park, der California Academy of Science und der City Hall geplant. Auch heute habe ich auf den öffentlichen Verkehr gesetzt, da die Distanz doch sehr groß ist. Aber auch viel laufen blieb mir auch heute nicht erspart. Ich hoffe das wirkt sich nicht nachteilig auf meine geplante Radtour morgen aus. 😁
Mit dem Bus konnte ich direkt von der Market Street bis zum Eingang des Golden Gate Parks fahren. Der Park ist einer der größten der Welt. Mit 5 km Länge und 800 m Breite ist er sogar größer als der Central Park in New York. Relativ mittig des Parks befinden sich einige Museen, u.a. die California Academy of Science, das de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Garden und der San Francisco Botanical Garden. Bis zur Academy of Science musste ich ein Stück durch den Park laufen. Da durch den Park leider auch öffentliche Straßen führen, war ich ganz froh, dass ich durch den Teil gelaufen bin, der nicht durch die Straßen gestört wurde. Dadurch konnte man die Natur und die Ruhe komplett genießen. Der Park ist ideal für den morgendlichen Spaziergang bzw. zum Laufen gehen, aber auch wenn man mal seine Ruhe braucht um z.B. nachzudenken. Schön ist auch, dass hier der Natur ihren freien Lauf gelassen wurde und sich das ein oder andere Getier angesiedelt hat.
Im Bereich der Academy of Science steht auch das de Young Museum. Hier wird Kunst ausgestellt. Da dies nichts für mich ist, bin ich nur in die Academy gegangen. Durch den City Pass hatte ich hier nicht nur freien Eintritt, ich konnte an der langen Schlage vorbei und sofort ohne Wartezeit rein.
Die Academy hat Ausstellungen zur Entwicklung des Menschen, zu Tieren in Afrika, ein Planetarium (mit Extraeintritt!), einen Regenwald und eine ganze Etage für die Wasserwelt. Außerdem widmet man sich den Erdbeben, da San Francisco genau auf der San Andreas Verwerfung liegt und das Erdbeben von 1906 fast die ganze Stadt zerstört hat. Hier kann man sich in einen Raum begeben und sich "durchschütteln" lassen. Dadurch soll einem nähergebracht werden, wie stark die beiden stärksten Erdbeben von 1906 und 1989 waren. Aber nur in verkürzter Version. Ziemlich interessant. Neben diesem Erlebnis war eigentlich nur die Unterwasserwelt das eigentliche Highlight der gesamten Ausstellung. Hier wird viel gezeigt von verschiedenen Fischarten über Korallenriffe bis hin zu der Unterwasserwelt ganz weit unten im Ozean, im Bereich, wohin die Sonneenstrahlen nicht gelangen. Und ganz nebenbei: Ich hab Dorie gefunden! 😁
Nach einem Essen in der hauseigenen Cafeteria bin ich wieder raus aus dem Park und habe mir den nächstmöglichen Bus gesucht um wieder Richtung Stadt zu fahren. Hier Stand noch ein Stopp am Alamo Square und den Painted Ladies auf dem Plan.
Dort angekommen wurde ich aber das erste Mal auf dieser Reise enttäuscht. Der gesamte Alamo Square befindet sich im Umbau bzw. in der Erneuerung. Alles wurde aufgerissen. Nur ein kleiner Teil direkt vor den Painted Ladies wurde noch freigelassen, damit die Besucher von dort Fotos machen konnten. Leider trotzdem kein schöner Anblick. Wenn man die Bilder mit dem satten Grün des Rasen des Alamo Square und im Hintergrund die Painted Ladies im Kopf hat, zerstört so ein Bauzaun und ein nun brauner Alamo Square doch ganz schön die Stimmung. Wie lange hier noch gebaut wird konnte ich leider nicht in Erfahrung bringen. Sieht aber noch ziemlich danach aus, dass es vor kurzem erst losging. Nichts destotrotz konnte ich ein paar Bilder der Painted Ladies machen.
Die Painted Ladies sind 6 verschiedenfarbige alte Häuser in viktorianischem Stil, die sogar das Erdbeben und den Brand von 1906 überstanden haben. Gebaut im 19. Jahrhundert.
Als nächstes habe ich den Bus zur City Hall und zur Civic Center Plaza genommen. Die City Hall ist das Rathaus von San Francisco. Beim Erdbeben 1906 zerstört, wieder fast orginal aufgebaut. Der nächste kritische Punkt kam beim Erdbeben 1989. Hier hatte sich die Kuppel um 10 cm gedreht und auf Grund der Konstruktion konnte die Kuppel das gesamte Gebäude in Schwingungen versetzen und somit zerstören. Daher wurde das Gebäude vom Fundament getrennt und durch Stahl- und Gummikonstruktionen verstärkt. Die Kuppel enthält übrigens echtes Gold im Wert von über $300.000. Auf dem Vorplatz kann man sich entspannen oder etwas von den zahlreichen Food Trucks essen. Rings um die City Hall sind u.a. Theater, Kino und Museen angesiedelt. Die City Hall selbst kann man betreten, muss sich aber einer kompletten Sicherheitskontrolle wie am Flughafen unterziehen. Es gibt sogar zu bestimmten Zeiten kostenlose Touren, bei denen man auch den Bürgermeister treffen kann wenn man Glück hat.

Today the fog came up into the city. When I got up at 9 am the fog was over and in San Francisco. I planned a visit at the Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Science and the City Hall. I used the public transportation system again because of the large distance. But I also had to walk a lot. I hope I can do the bike tour tomorrow. 😁
With the bus I could drive from the Market Street straight to the entrance of the Golden Gate Park. This park is one of the biggest in the world. With a lenght of 5 km (ca. 3 miles) and a width of 800 meters (ca. a half mile) it is bigger than the Central Park in New York. At the middle point of the park are some museums located. For example the California Academy of Science, de Young Museum, Japanese Tea Garden and the San Francisco Botanical Garden. To get to the Academy of Science I had to go a long way through the park. Unfortunately there are some public streets in the park, but the way I walked weren't any streets. So I could hear the nature and it was pretty quiet. This park is good to do the morning walk or for a run at the morning. Also it is pretty good if you want some quiet for example to think about some things. Also it is great that the people let the nature do their own way. You can see some animals in here. At the location of the Academy of Science there is also the de Young Museum. It's an art museum. But I don't like art so I went just to the Academy. With the City Pass I got, I had a free admission and I could walk straight in the museum and not had to wait at the end of the long row to get in. The Academy has some exhibitions about the evolution of the human being, about animals in Africa, a planetarium (you have to pay an extra admission), a rainforest and one whole Level about the underwater world. Also they have exhibitions about earthquakes, because San Francisco is located on the San Francisco fault and the earthquake of 1906 destroyed almost the whole city. Here you can go into a room to let you shaking. With this you shall feel the strongest earthquakes from 1906 and 1989. But in a shorter way. Pretty interesting. Beside this experience the underwater world was the real highlight of the museum. They are showing a lot of the world under water, several kinds of fishes, coral reefs and the world where the sunlight doesn't shine. By the way: I found Dorie. 😁
After lunch in the cafeteria I went out of the park and searched a bus to get back to the city. I wanted to stop at the Alamo Square and the Painted Ladies. But this was the first time on this vacation I was disappointed. The whole Alamo Square is on improvement. Everything is lacerated except a small part of it to make some pictures of the Painted Ladies. Unfortunately not a beautiful view. If you have the pictures in mind with the green gras of the Alamo Square with the Painted Ladies in background, this construction site fence and the brown Alamo Square destroys the atmosphere. I don't know how long they are working on it. But it looks like that the beginning is not long ago. But I could take some good pictures of the Painted Ladies.
The Painted Ladies are six colored victorian houses. They survived the earthquake and the fire of 1906. Built in the 19th century.
Up next I took the bus to the City Hall and the Civic Center Plaza. The City Hall was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1906 and then rebuilt. But at the earthquake of 1989 the dome turned 10 centimeters and because of the construction the dome could cause some vibrations through the building and cause his destruction. So the building was separated from his basement and added by some steel and rubber. By the way the gold at the dome is real gold and has a value of ca. $300,000. At the forecourt you can relax or eat something from the numerious Food Trucks. Around the City Hall there are theatres, cinemas and museums. You can get in the City Hall if you want. But they do a check like the check at the airport. You can also book a tour through the City Hall. And if you get lucky you can see the major.
