Santa Fe, NM - Holbrook, AZ
Some petrified pieces of wood and a colorful desert
Heute hatte ich die längste Strecke vor mir: Santa Fe bis Holbrook, Arizona mit Abstecher auf den Sandia Crest und durch den Petrified Forest.
Los ging es kurz nach 8 Uhr. Auf dem Weg zum Sandia Crest bin ich
durch Madrid gekommen. Ich hatte mir sehr viel von dem Ort versprochen, da hier meines Wissens nach der Film Wild Hogs mit John Travolta und Tim Allen gedreht wurde. Aber hier steht zum einen
„nur“ das Diner von Maggie und zum anderen wurde meiner Meinung nach hier gar nicht weiter gedreht. Das Diner, das nun nur noch ein Souvenirshop mit extrem überteuerten Wild Hogs Zeugs ist, wurde
extra für den Film gebaut. Wenn ich mir aber die Straße und alles ringsum das Diner anschaue, befürchte ich, dass es nur für die Innenaufnahmen gebaut wurde. Denn der Ort hat nicht annähernd so
eine breite Straße wie im Film und auch der „Freiraum“ ums Diner ist nicht annähernd so groß. Ich war doch etwas enttäuscht. Aber das ist dann wohl Hollywood....
Aber der Sandia Crest hat das alles wieder wett gemacht. Nach einer Fahrt den Berg rauf von gut 20 Minuten, habe ich den höchsten Punkt von um die 3.200 Meter erreicht. 2014 bin ich an anderer Stelle von der anderen Seite (aus Albuquerque) mit der Tram hochgefahren. Dort oben gibt es auch verschiedene Wanderwege und man hat nach beiden Seiten einen super Ausblick.
Weiter an Albuquerque vorbei ging es die meiste Zeit nur den Interstate lang. Ich hätte auch über Los Lunas die Originalroute nehmen können, da der Tag aber heute eh schon lang genug ist, hatte ich mich dagegen entschieden. Ich bin aber in Laguna runter und dort bis Grants weit weg vom Interstate gefahren. In Grants habe ich dann die Photo Op genutzt und mein Auto unter dem Grants Route 66 Schild fotografiert.
Nach stundenlangem Fahren auf dem Interstate kam dann endlich der Petrified Forest National Park. Der Park besteht aus zwei Teilen: dem Painted Desert und dem namensgebenden Petrified Forest. Da sich hier zu 2014 nichts geändert hat, könnt ihr gerne hier nachlesen, was einen dort erwartet.
Aber dieses Mal konnte ich im Painted Desert einige der Glyphen entdecken, die mir 2014 noch verborgen blieben.
Übernachtet habe ich wieder in Holbrook. Leider aber wieder nicht in dem Wigwam Motel, da dort alles ausgebucht war. Aber mein Hotel war dennoch wieder sehr sehr gut und mit Frühstück. Nach fast ingesamt 10 Stunden bin ich dann dort angekommen und habe mir nur was zu essen geholt und dann gings ab ins Bett.
Today was the longest trip: Santa Fe to Holbrook, Arizona with a stop at Sandia Crest and the Petrified Forest.
I've started a few minutes past 8 am On the way to the Sandia Crest I crossed the city of Madrid. I had promised myself so much of it because I thought that the movie "Wild Hogs" with John Travolta and Tim Allen was filmed here. But there was "only" the diner of Maggie and I guess that movie wasn't really filmed here. That diner, now just a souvenir shop with overpriced Wild Hogs stuff, was built just for the movie. But when I look at the street and the surrounding of that diner I sadly think that it was only built for the inside scenes. That street in that city isn't nearly as wide as in the movie and the space around the diner isn't as much as in the movie, too. So it was so disappointing for me. But hey, that is Hollywood....
But the Sandia Crest made it up for. After a drive of about 20 minutes I reached the highest point at approx. 11,000 ft. 2014 I was drove with the tram to another point of the other side (from Albuquerque). You can find there a lot of hiking trails and you have an awesome view to both sides.
Crossing Albuquerque most of the time I had to take the Interstate again. There is a possibility to take Route 66 through Los Lunas but because the day was already pretty long I decided against it. But I left the Interstate at Laguna and drove far away from the Interstate down to Grants where I used the photo op and took a picture of my car under that Route 66 sign.
After driving hour by hour on the Interstate I finally reached the Petrified Forest NP. That park is two in one: the Painted Desert and the eponymous Petrified Forest. Because there is no difference between 2014 and now you can everything about that park here.
But this time I could see some of the glyphs I didn't see in 2014 at the Painted Desert.
I've slept another time in Holbrook. Sadly the Wigwam Motel was booked up. But my hotel was a pretty good one and with breakfast. After almost 10 hours I arrived there, got something to eat and fall asleep.
