Holbrook, AZ - Grand Canyon, AZ
A huge crack through the land
Heute ging es wieder raus aus Holbrook hoch zum Grand Canyon. In Holbrook bin ich dann noch an einem der noch existierenden Wigwam Motels vorbeigekommen. Hier kann man in einem dieser Wigwam übernachten. Sie bestehen alle aus Beton. Ich war selber noch in keinem drin, habe aber Bilder gesehen. Für die letzte Nacht war das hier aber ausgebucht, so dass ich halt nicht in einem übernachtet habe. 😁
Etwas weiter in Winslow, AZ konnte ich dann auf der Ecke aus dem Eagles Song „Take it easy“ stehen. In dem Song heißt es nämlich: „Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine sight to see, it’s a girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me …..“ Und die Route 66 geht natürlich mitten durch die Stadt.
Etwas außerhalb von Winslow geht es zu dem Barringer Krater. Dies ist der erste sicher als Meteoriteneinschlagskrater erkannte Krater. Über ein Visitor Center kann man für $25 Zutritt zum Rand und zu Führungen kaufen. Da ich in 2014 das schon gemacht hatte, habe ich es dieses Mal sein lassen und bin weiter.
Eine ganze Weile weiter auf dem Interstate bin ich dann zu einer weiteren Ikone der Route 66 gekommen. Leider zerfällt dieser Ort immer mehr: Twin Arrows
Wie man auf den Bildern sehen kann, steht leider nur noch einer der beiden riesigen Pfeile. Einer ist, ich glaube letztes Jahr (2021), umgefallen. Da sie nur aus Holz bestehen, war das natürlich nur eine Frage der Zeit. Auch wann der zweite fällt. Leider findet es der Besitzer des Grundstückes nicht für nötig hier etwas Geld zu investieren und eine Route 66 Ikone wieder zum Leben auferstehen zu lassen. Lieber wird auf der anderen Seite des Interstate ein Hotel und Casino betrieben….
Mit großen Schritten weiter auf dem Interstate nähere ich mich den San Francisco Mountains und damit Flagstaff und natürlich dem Grand Canyon, meinem Ziel für heute.
In Flagstaff habe ich dem Lowell Observatory noch einen kurzen Besuch abgestattet. Ein kleiner Tipp: bei gutem Wetter lohnt es sich am Abend herzukommen. Dann hat man nämlich die einmalige Chance mit einem der Teleskope ins Weltall zu schauen. Eintritt $25, die sich aber lohnen.
Bis zum Grand Canyon bin ich dann noch mal eine gute Stunde gefahren. Auf dem Weg dahin bin ich durch eine Gegend gekommen, in der vor kurzem ein Waldbrand war. Ich hatte vorher in Flagstaff noch nachgefragt, ob man denn hier wieder langfahren kann. Ja man kann. Man sieht aber auch rechts und links die verbrannten Bäume.
Ich habe wie 2014 den Osteingang genommen, da man hier gleich ein paar Aussichtspunkte, u.a. den Watchtower, ansteuern kann. Der Watchtower war leider wegen Bauarbeiten geschlossen und man konnte nicht rauf. Nach einer Weile bin ich dann in meinem Hotel bzw. Lodge angekommen: der Yavapai Lodge. 2014 hatte ich noch in einem Hotel in Tusayan, eine halbe Stunde Fahrt entfernt, übernachtet. Dieses Mal hatte ich aber direkt am Canyon ein Zimmer bekommen. Und es war super. Man konnte innerhalb von einer viertel Stunde den Rand des Canyon erreichen und an diesem lang wandern. Da ich nicht mehr soviel Zeit hatte und zum Sonnenuntergang frisch geduscht am Mather Point sein wollte, bin ich auch nur eine gute Stunde am Rand entlang gewandert. Aber es war toll. Einfach atemberaubend schön. Mehrere Tage hier am Grand Canyon lohnen sich definitiv.
Gegen 20.45 Uhr ging dann die Sonne unter und wie ich sind viele Besucher am Mather Point (für mich immer noch einer der schönsten Aussichtspunkte) zu diesem Spektakel zusammengekommen. Einfach nur wow….
Ich hatte gehofft, noch ein paar Sternenfotografien zu machen, aber Wolken und der helle Mond haben das verhindert.
Aber es war ein toller Tag, gekrönt vom Sonnenuntergang am Grand Canyon, den ich 2014 wegen schlechtem Wetter leider nicht sehen konnte.
Today I left Holbrook with the direction to the Grand Canyon. In Holbrook I passed one of the left Wigwam Motels You can sleep in one of them. They are made of concrete. I never was in one of them but saw some pictures. But for the last night it was booked up so I couldn't sleep in one. 😁
A few miles away I stopped in Winslow, AZ and stood at the corner from the Eagles song "Take it easy". In that song say sung: "Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, such a fine sight to see, it' s a girl my Lord in a flatbed Ford slowing down to take a look at me ...." And yes, Route 66 is crossing right through that city.
A few miles out of Winslow you can drive to the Barringer Crater. That is the first one which was designated as a crater made of a meteor. Through a Visitors Center you can by a ticket to get to the edge and you can see some guided tours. Because I've seen the edge in 2014 I let it be and drove off.
After a while on the Interstate I reached another Route 66 icon. Sadly that one is still falling into ruin: Twin Arrows.
As you can see on the pictures there is only on of the two arrows left standing. That falling down one felt I guess last year (2021). They are made of wood so it was a question of time. Also when the second will fall. Sadly the owner will not invest some money to bring that Route 66 icon back to life. For him it's better to operate a hotel and casino on the other side of the Interstate....
With big steps I'm approaching the San Francisco Mountains and of course Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. My destination for today.
In Flagstaff I stopped at the Lowell Observatory. Tip: with good weather conditions it is worth the visit at evening/night. There you can have a look right through one of the telescope into space. Entrance fee $25 but worth it.
Driving to the Grand Canyon was another almost 60 minutes. On the way I passed an area where was a fire in the woods. In Flagstaff I asked if I can drive through that area. And yes you can. But you see on the left and the right the burned trees.
As in 2014 I used the east entrance because you can stop at so much view point on the way among other at the Watchtower. Unfortunately the Watchtower was closed because of construction and you couldn't step up. After a while I reached my hotel respect. my Lodge: the Yavapai Lodge. In 2014 I had to rest in a hotel in Tusayan, about 30 minutes away from the Grand Canyon. But this time I got a room at the canyon. And it was awesome. Walking about 15 minutes you can reach the rim and walk along it. Because I hadn't so much time till sunset and wanted be at the Mather Point freshly showered I only walked about an hour. It was so stunning. It is absolutely worth it to spend more days here.
At about 8.45 pm the sun went down and like me so much people where at the Mather Point (for me still the most beautiful point) to see it. Just WOW.....
I hoped to take some good night sky pictures with stars and os on but there were to many clouds and the moon was too bright. But it was an awesome day topped with that beautiful sunset at the Grand Canyon which I couldn't see in 2014 because of the bad weather.
